Several years ago, Josh McCown was at a Bible study with some fellow NFL players when a few of the African-Americans in the room started a conversation about race. They described the feeling of being followed around in a mall. They discussed what it’s like to be tailed by police for no reason. It struck McCown that these are conversations he never has to have, because he is white. “They’re running a race with a weighted vest on,” he thought.

He asked rhetorically if there is some endemic difference that makes African-Americans more likely than whites to commit crimes. The straw that broke the camel's back for me was this: I had already stopped watching ALL football on television...then I took a close look at our cable statement.

Down at the bottom was a $5.47 charge for 'regional sports access'.

Knowing that the kneeling disease had also infected college football, I called the cable company and had them remove the cable box that is hooked up to the tv.

No tv for me--all my content comes through the Roku streaming device--and I saved about $100 a month.

Maybe there are some but I’ve yet to see a report of roving bands of white, Asian, even Hispanics swarming into a mall store and simply ransacking it for anything of value. Have you?

THAT’S why mall cops pay attention to the blacks in the mall. Same thing with towelheads in the airport.

Some idiots denounce it as racial profiling when such attention is based on experience and the odds of who the criminal might be.

There used to be a shopping mall in Austin that was near the University of Texas campus. Every spring, during the state high school track competition known as the “Texas Relays”, the racers and their mostly black families would descend on the mall like a plague of locusts and start stealing everything in sight.

So the store owners began closing their stores for the weekend of the relays and NAACP decried it as racism and sued the mall owner. The NAACP won, the mall was forced to keep the stores open and the store owners eventually pulled out of the mall, leaving it a near empty village.

Now, is that racism or is that trying to protect your business from thieves? The blacks would have you believe the stores had an obligation to LET themselves be robbed.

The only time I remember being followed around a mall it was a black guy who was staying in my 5 o’clock position, about 6 feet back. (I sensed someone there and glanced back to make sure my senses were correct. He stayed in the same relative position through several turns. I finally stopped and gave him a full stare as he broke off and moved on.

Probably just a pickpocket, but I wasn’t in the mood to be a participant in a knockout game if that was his sport.

Stereotypes can not be perpetuated unless there is a strong element of truth to them. Otherwise they make no sense and die out.

This type of broad brush stereotype that is totally false is the type of comment that destroys our credibility.

I live in a mostly Black part of South Atlanta. I’ve lived in mostly Black parts of inner city Chicago. I’ve walked through the parts of both innercity Chicago and Atlanta that have the highest crime rates.

If a white guy walks into most Black areas, he is totally safe. In a few areas, if the white guy exhibits a body language that is seen by the Blacks as looking for trouble, then that white guy will find trouble.

But in most Black areas, the looking-for-trouble body language is just observed with ridicule.

Bullshit. I’m unambiguously white and, back when this sort of article was newer (80s) I could claim EVERY SORT OF PROOF OF RACISM that the black author cited. Every one.

There absolutely is a reason! When you belong to an easily identifiable group that commits a high disproportionate number of crimes, it makes all the sense in the world to pay more attention to people belonging to that group,just like if I’m in the savanna I pay a lot more attention to lions than gazelles.

Given that reality, blacks that complain about being “unfairly” tailed would help their situation a lot more by coming down hard on the criminals in their groups. Only by cleaning up their “house” can they expect meaningful changes.

Why dont we make them run identical businesses in a “lily white” and a darker area and at the end of the year compare and contrast how much stuff went missing. There is a reason why kwickie marts in certain parts of town have bullet proof glass at the checkout and it is not because the owners hate minorities soooo much that they gladly will spend tens of thousands of dollars just to oppress them.

I guess these people never visited a typical black neighborhood in America. If they did they would see the behavior that causes black males to be incarcerated at such a high rate. It has nothing to do with white people. They would see 15 year olds running around with guns, selling drugs and stealing cars to joyride in. These kids don't start out being bad. I've coached a lot of them on the basketball court between the ages of 8 to 11 years old. They are good kids at that age. I think that their mother still controls them up to that age. After the age of 11 the mother loses control to the streets. That wouldn't happen so often if there was a father in the house. If Mr Macnown wants to know what is weighing blacks down he should look at the number of kids born to one parent.

Blame it on BEHAVIOR. Example: When I was in my early teens I used to go to a mom & pop store nearby now and then. Because a number of teens* had been shoplifting there, I was watched and followed in the store. I hadn't done it, but they didn't know that. The BEHAVIOR of SOME blacks in malls has been problematic, so blacks tend to get a bit of extra surveillance. It's not fair, but it's the real world. If they can upgrade the behavior of their fellow blacks a lot of that crap will cease. I can't do it for them.

so, you’ve waltzed through a crime heavy district and managed to not get hassled, so the notion that a high crime district is more dangerous than a low crime district is a canard generated by ignorant buffoons that makes smart guys like you look bad...
