Rhine wines are generally drier. Look for a Spatlese or Auslese. The latter will be sweeter, as there’s less water in the grape. At most retail stores, you should be able to find both.

Little secret: Piesporter Michelsberg gets a bad rap IMO. It doesn’t have the panache of the Goldtropfchen vineyards, which sit higher up the slope. As a result, you can buy them for $8-$12 a bottle.

For the past 15 months, I’ve been buying my wine from the winery I frequented in Germany. They have a website and ship to Texas and many other states. Eduardo Kroth has been a family owned and operated winery since 1503.

During my tour in Germany, I’d visit every 4-6 weeks, each visit lasted a minimum of a couple hours. His son now runs the show, and I hope to make a visit next year.
