Seattleites making a run to the border for … Coke?
Seattle Times ^ | January 31, 2018 | Danny Westneat

Ahmed Mohamed’s shop in the farthest reaches of West Seattle is so small you can easily miss it. But he’s nevertheless Ground Zero for Seattle’s latest economic experiment.

Mohamed runs West Seattle Halal Market, a two-aisle store specializing in meats and poultry butchered according to Islamic rules. A few shelves in the middle of the store, though, are given over to a popular side product that now has his neighborhood, White Center, literally divided.

>>A team of UW researchers is beginning a four-year, $2 million study to judge the tax’s effects. That’s good, as the city’s grasp of the situation seems a little suspect. It suggests, on its website, that customers somehow shouldn’t even have to pay it.

So $2,000,000 of tax money is going to a college to fund a study to see if the tax is even a profitable idea???

Socialism sucks

People gotta have what people want. Finding a cheaper price is American buying. Insane taxes on anything tells me that the leadership in the local government is incompetent. LOL, don’t we all suffer in one way or the other? Take the US Postal service, when it costs a business man/woman $7+ to send a package for a product that is worth $4.99, how long can they compete? Same crap different bag. We cry about Govt. regulations, and yet no one in Gov’t seems to want to stick their neck out, so the flow continues. Death and Taxes!

Socialist Seattle logic:

Let's spend $2 million to find out why we're not getting any revenue from the soda tax.

If they needed the revenue so badly that they had to tax soda, where is this $2 million slush fund to pay some Lefty researchers at the university coming from?

Answer: From the soda tax.

Let that sink in for a moment....

Seattle stores could “go on strike” by refusing to sell any sugar-taxed drinks. Then the city would receive zero revenues.

The funniest part is the Seattle.gov website says that distributors are to pay the tax, not the store or consumer.

I am sure nobody in Seattle understands that no business or corporation, in the history of the world, has ever paid for anything.

The consumer always and always will pay. That is where the money comes from originally and inevitably.

Better yet, go to Canada. Coke is made with real sugar instead of HFCS. Tastes better and probably better for you too.

Doe the lib insanity in Seattle extend to soft drinks with artificial sweeteners?

Liberals have no understanding of basic economics. Faced with higher prices the market will either demand less of a product or seek cheaper substitutes. In this case, the market will simply go elsewhere to buy their soda. Perhaps Seattle officials might better understand the situation with a quote from Lenin who said people vote with their feet...if they don’t like things they go elsewhere.

"the distributors pay the tax"

And there are hundreds of thousands of registered voters who will believe that.

The article goes on to state that he cannot sell any of that product because a store outside the tax area is close by. Why then would he allocate shelf space in his tiny store to a product he can't sell? Also, in his case, it's obviously not a popular side product. Weird article.
