You hit the nail on the head regarding dick. I few years ago I finally read the book on which one of my favorite movies was based, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. It is the only time in my life I thought the movie was better than the book. I was sorely disappointed.
I realized his poorest skill is coming up with titles for his works. They all seem to be complete sentences.

It is the only time in my life I thought the movie was better than the book.
One other movie that I thought was better than the book was "Disclosure" by Michael Crichton. I knew of the absolutely crucial scene that was going to be painfully explicit, so tat's when I went into the kitchen to make cheeseburger.
Besides that scene (which at least was crucial to the plot), and the one with the VR version of the computer system, I found the movie better structured, and a lot more fun. I don't even LIKE Demi Moore or Michael Douglas, but they were perfect for their respective parts. Oddly, the book felt like it was being written in order to be made into a movie, but the screenwriter and director made positive changes that added a little depth to a pretty pedestrian book.
I haven't read the book version of "The Godfather", but it would be hard to top the movie.
