Yes, I do, and rest assured, so does Trump. This is a negotiation in a highly charged political environment that has implications for the existence of the Republic. What negotiation have you ever been involved in where the first offer on the table was the one settled on and the end of the process?
I have often said that some of the DACA eligible are “keepers” and a number of FReepers disagree*. But 1.8 million seems to be way more than what I would consider. Case by case, judged on merit, I can live with.
*This site would be boring indeed if we all agreed on anything!
Another FReeper has made the argument that E-Verify puts the pressure upon employers to do the government's job. The government did not keep them out or keep track of those allowed in who overstayed. If government does its job the problem will be minimized.
I agree that it will be 50% who make it all the way through. In the meantime we get chain migration beyond spouse and children gone, lottery gone, and hopefully the house will negotiate EVerify
Is that different than saying that businesses have to card people to prove they are old enough to drink, or make sure they have the proper prescriptions before giving out pills? I guess a bit, in that yes, if the government kept illegals out of the country, they couldn’t possibly be trying to get a job.
But it seems like a small inconvenience when the companies probably already are checking social security numbers, and collecting taxes for the government, and enforcing the government’s medical insurance rules, and the government’s wage rules and overtime regulations and time-off requirements.
Plus part of the problem is companies that are purposely hiring illegals, because they are cheaper and can be cheated since the workers are scared to be turned in.
Those companies would be caught with an e-verify system.
The President is strong and will do his utmost to fulfill his campaign promises on immigration. Yet presidencies are fleeting while Congress and courts live on and can change the rules at anytime. Perhaps the best outcome would be strict enforcement of existing laws on immigration with no new deals on amnesty.
You’re not going to get an end to anchor babies. The Cheap Labor Express is coming to get you!!!
The problem with doing it on a “case by case” basis is that you have to delegate that authority to someone. And we’re supposed to be a government of laws, not of men.
