Here’s a somewhat less sensational article:

http://www.laserfocusworld.com/articles/2017/09/ultraintense-100-petawatt-laser-aims-to-uncover-the-secret-of-vacuum.html

As the article suggests, there seems to be a race for the “world’s most powerful laser”, with several countries participating. This reminds me of the race for the “world’s most powerful particle accelerator”, but perhaps not yet as expensive. The scientists see opportunities for discovery, but I suspect the people with the checkbooks see opportunities for national power and prestige.

Dr. Alan Parsons already built a super powerful “laser”.

We are not even remotely close to getting that kind of power out of a laser.

Yes, I noticed that as well. The probably mean PWh or PWs - where a femtosecond burst has a few Watts of power... this type of articles always get that wrong, because they're written by idiots.

I really don’t want to have to worry about illegal space aliens voting too.

Slight correction: PW/h or PW/s... A 1 femtosecond burst at 100 PW/s would equal 100 W. That sounds reasonable enough.
