I think this thing may be a bit of a gullibility test.

Gold may be resistant to rust, but so are platinum, chromium, and palladium.
Rust is oxidation, similar to a slow burn. Gold does oxidize. It also tarnishes and corrodes.
Gold is resistant to these things, but they still happen.
