PARIS — Slovenian-born Melania Trump has been unafraid to go against her husband's "America First" agenda and stay true to her roots, if there's a message to be taken from her bold, foreign-flavored wardrobe in 2017.
In her first year as first lady, Mrs. Trump has often wrapped herself in the clothes of her home continent as several American designers publicly refused to dress her in what was a fashion industry-wide backlash against her unpopular spouse.
The first first lady to be born in continental Europe, Trump grew up in Sevnica in Slovenia, in the southern Balkans, just over 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the Italian border. Her first real taste for fashion came while living in Paris as a young model in the mid-1990s, years before she got U.S. citizenship in 2006.

Tres snarky article. Melania has amazing taste and dresses appropriately for every situation; they want to make it a crime for her to wear European designers. Good grief.

Have you noticed how many ads now feature models that resemble either Melania or Ivanka? Ah, a new look !
Some of the bigger name US designers, i.e., Ralph Lauren, didn’t go along with the industry hissy fit. Mostly, I think the ones who didn’t protest Donald via Melania are straight.
In anything she wears, this woman is just gorgeous, and she’s always very gracious. So chalk up the negatives to projecting by the writer.
Shouldn’t it be to her European roots?

That’s adorable!
Our Melania has shown extraordinary sensibilities when it comes to visiting foreign countries. She has, at times, used her wardrobe to demonstrate respect for the host countries. A subtlety I expect to be entirely invisible to the Fake Media.
Why any designer would balk at dressing Melania is beyond me. Anything she wears is going to look like haute couture.
I’m sure Our Melania wouldn’t wear anything most of the whiners would design anyway. She has good taste, and they don’t. That’s why they are nothing more than flashes in the pan.
The real designers, like Ralph Lauren, and Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel) are also great businessmen, and they know a good thing when they see it. She has worn the creations of both men and has looked amazing. Why would she wear crap when she can wear Lauren and Chanel and look terrific?
The designers didn’t want to dress her. They fell all over themselves saying so at the beginning of the Trump administration, so eff em. Her taste far exceeds their paltry designs anyway. She’s much too sophisticated for them.
