Obama on Government Shutdown in 2013
C-SPAN ^ | 1 October 2013 | C-SPAN

Posted on 01/20/2018 2:32:11 AM PST by CodeToad

"At midnight last night, for the first time in 17 years, Republicans in Congress chose to shut down the federal government. Let me be more specific: One faction, of one party, in one house of Congress, in one branch of government, shut down major parts of the government -- all because they didn't like one law."

"We know that certain services and benefits that America's seniors and veterans and business owners depend on must be put on hold. Certain offices, along with every national park and monument, must be closed. And while last night, I signed legislation to make sure our 1.4 million active-duty military are paid through the shutdown, hundreds of thousands of civilian workers -- many still on the job, many forced to stay home -- aren't being paid, even if they have families to support and local businesses that rely on them. And we know that the longer this shutdown continues, the worse the effects will be. More families will be hurt. More businesses will be harmed."

"So, once again, I urge House Republicans to reopen the government, restart the services Americans depend on, and allow the public servants who have been sent home to return to work. "

The Democrats and media always blame Republicans for shutdowns when it’s usually the Democrats responsible.

“Are we now, on FR, all in for the govt? “

Who says we’re all-in or all-out??

Obama’s speech shows the hypocrisy of the Democrats. In 2013 they were completely against a shutdown but today they are all for it.

There’s another thread where FReepers are calling Rand Paul a traitor for voting against the bill that is not a budget.

Make no mistake about it; Obama is leading a civil war against the US Constitution and those striving to uphold it along with the Bill of Rights, freedom of religion, speech and private property. That is exactly what we have been witnessing for years, but most have failed to recognize the treason and call it for the evil that it is.

I think the five shutdowns from the 1980s/1990s...all basically one single day or a weekend...were acceptable to the general public. Once we did the 1996/1997 routine with 27 total days, public view changed. And I think the 2013 episode simply convinced that public that a shutdown really didn’t amount to much unless you were coming to a national park (note the present shift, if any national park collects a fee at the gate, they must remain open).

All of this leads me to the view that more than sixty-percent of the public simply doesn’t care....it’s all fake acting and marginalized government existence. I think once we get to 5 Feb (two weeks away), and the Senators realize there’s no hyped up sense about this, they will have some emergency meeting and write up a fake-resolution to agree upon. My thinking though....in the past, each of these Presidents would fall all over a fake resolution and sign off. I’m not so sure that a fake fix would work with Trump. He might go and suggest that both parties are being dishonest with the public (which they are).

This might go to mid-Feb.

The fed could shutdown for the next year and I wouldn’t care one damned bit.

I might agree with you but then these idiots would go and make the pay-situation retro-active and pay all these government workers back-pay for no work done. You can imagine a whole month of zero work....getting some idiot a pay-check.

I had a discussion with a GS guy about seven years ago over this whole scenario, and he had spent a number of years in the Arlington region and was familiar with the mess. In his mind, most folks could survive 30 days straight without that government pay-check. But because they all have hefty mortgages...he suggested that along about the sixth week....folks would be freaking out because they didn’t have the depth to cover two or three months without a check. In his mind, none of these threats would ever go past thirty days because of the financial crash that would occur in the DC area.

I love the videos of Bill Clinton and Obama both proposing the necessity of the wall and immigration enforcement.

It doesn’t do much good to repair the internal damage over and over rather than fix the hole in the roof that is causing the damage.

Bingo!

In said the same thing yesterday when discussing DACA.

They argued a unilateral position that DACA should have no terms attached.

I argued, many on my side feel the same way aboit what we want , however, many on my side are arguing their position is also without terms.

I argue, nobody is getting what they want without a deal of compromise so....Let’s make a deal and be done with it.

All I remember is the stunt Obama pulled....WWII vets came and couldn’t get to the WWII Memorial.

It is important not to lose sight of the differences between the 2013 shutdown and the 2018 shutdown because the MSM is going to try & obscure them. The 2013 shutdown was a last ditch effort to delay Obamacare which had been forced through Congress unilaterally and against the will of the majority of American.

Similar to 2013 it is again the Democrats trying to subvert the will of the people and impose their demands. There is no DACA amnesty bill ready to pass. The bill they are shutting down the Government over contains nothing they are opposed to. Rather they are trying to use the hardship being imposed on the Military and border security as a club to attack the right for the midterm elections.

POTUS and his cabinet need to find a way to pay those salaries or set up a no interest loan service for the people who will need to work through the shutdown and defang the Democrats.

"One faction, of one party, in one house of Congress, in one branch of government, shut down major parts of the government -- all because they didn't like one law."

...and that party is the Democrats, that chamber is the Senate, and that faction is the Schumer cabal. But that ‘one law' is not a law at all but an unlawful Obama Executive Order. Thanks Obama!

The press is calling what Obama did in 2013 a “Weaponizing the Shutdown”.

He shutdown things that had no government employees involved.

Absolutely!

2013: Republicans tried to stop the harm of ObamaCare against the people.

2017: The Democrats are trying to harm Americans AGAIN by forcing Congress to grant amnesty to illegal aliens.
