Ahh, Friends. The US sitcom that took over the world.
Millennials may look back fondly to the heady days of the ultimate 20-something Manhattan lifestyle enjoyed by our favourite flatmates - Monica, Ross, Chandler, Joey, Rachel and Phoebe.
But nearly a quarter of a century - yikes! - since the show began, a new generation of fans are discovering the hit show for the first time on Netflix. And some of them are clearly finding it a bit uncomfortable.
christina @cxorlando There is nothing I hate more than Ross in the male nanny episode of Friends. He is SO SEXIST AND HOMOPHOBIC and I just want to jump into the tv and strangle him 4:30 PM - Jan 8, 2018
Another found herself not enjoying the show as much second time around.
Christine Carr @ChristineCarr Replying to @thepooluk and 2 others I was a uni student in the 90s so looked forward to rewatching Friends on Netflix over New Year. But I agree - the fat Monica and gay Chandler jokes feel very out of place now. And was Joey *always* that bit creepy? Disappointing. 3:20 AM - Jan 4, 2018
Freelance writer James Baldock, who wrote about the Friends issue in Metro, told BBC News the backlash against Friends "was inevitable". "People my age tend to think of Friends as 'current', but it's as steeped in nostalgia as, say, Miami Vice was 10 or 15 years ago."
Writer Rebecca Reid told BBC Radio 5 live she "couldn't believe how badly it has aged".
"The homophobia is staggering - the punchline of every joke about Ross is that his ex-wife is a lesbian, as if that's some failing of his and that it's hilarious that she's a lesbian.

Oh boo-hoo
With the Left phony and outrage go together like a horse and carriage.
They’d probably have a stroke watching “Three’s Company”
>>punchline of every joke about Ross is that his ex-wife is a lesbian, as if that’s some failing of his and that it’s hilarious that she’s a lesbian.
As opposed to joke where the punchline is “he’s a conservative” or “he dresses, dances, talks,...” like a white person.
Plenty of those in the MSM for 40 years
MASH...
Shes breaking my heart. What a maroon.
The country has changed so much.
We used to be normal, and TV used to show normal human reactions.
Now it’s all weird and we have to pretend that we like it and accept it and support it and think it’s normal. If you don’t, you will be destroyed.
Sooooo..... How about:
- Sanford & Son
- The Jeffersons
- All in the Family
Reporting on 3-4 tweets is now journalism. That should upset more people than a stupid, fictional show from years ago.
Man, this show takes me back. Me and my college buddies would watch “Must See TV” and then “ER” and then hit the bars.
Did Rocky Balboa sexually assault Adrian Pennino in the first film?
I have the DVD set for the Bob Newhart show. The way he treated his wife is cringe-worthy today, but was normal for the times, I suppose.
Forward 25 years later we are in the far left world that Friends helped to create, yet the children it spawned are now rejecting it. There's a cautionary fable here just waiting to be written...
It’s interesting because I thought the whole lesbian wife thing was part of the “gay normalization” at the time. The left can’t go far enough left.
“Three’s Company” itself was a cop-out. The show was based on a British series called “Man About the House.” The man in the British series makes John Ritter look like a closeted homosexual if compared side by side. Our puritanical distaste for sex shapes everything.
“Three’s Company” was something else too.
Wow, that’s ridiculous.
