ndia’s first ballistic missile submarine was out of commission for ten months after someone neglected to properly close a hatch. The nuclear-powered submarine INS Arihant was flooded with saltwater, necessitating nearly a year’s worth of repairs. You mean they don’t have sensors and alarms that scream like an air raid siren when a dive is initiated and a hatch isn’t properly closed?

Well, when the sirens went off, they called Tech Support and some guy in Mumbai named Steve told them it was OK to proceed.

Either bad design (there should be indicator lights in the control room showing red when hatches are not properly closed), or somebody in the control room was not paying attention. (PLUS the idiot who didn't close the hatch)

As I’ve written before, Chinese culture is a culture of wiggle room, of excuses, of second guessing.

I’ve wondered how this culture will play out when it comes to something like operating an aircraft carrier or a nuclear submarine.

This story might be seen as giving evidence of that cultural characteristic elsewhere in Asia.

“We will need to take control of your submarine for fixing it. Go to a browser and type in teamviewer.com. Failure to do this will result in the loss of your data and submarine.
