I mean, the guy has the answers in his f’n hand. He doesn’t need to shame his contestants over it.

I remember when he was the game show host for "High Rollers" with Ruta Lee. His persona was completely different on that show. The original Jeopardy! featured the great Art Fleming, who was always composed and professional. I remember they did a "Behind the Scenes" at the original show, and yes, they actually had a man behind the big board pulling the cards out, and they showed him to us! In some ways, TV was a lot more fun then.

Trebek had been hosting a music program for the CBC in his native Canada when High Rollers went into production.

That show was shot in an “in the round” theater, so they were unable to use cue cards. They tested a number of hosts on their ability to memorize the entire 60 minutes of material.

Trebek was the guy who passed that test.
