It is almost certainly a photo of the entire group of hunter’s geese - they do put limits on geese. It IS all food.
I have old photos of my grandfather and dad from pheasant hunting trips. They would hunt with a large group of guys lined up and walking the corn rows. I got to go a few times as a kid and stand at the end of the fields so the birds would flush up at the last minute.
Old cars from the 40’s with ropes strung out and maybe 40 birds strung up and hanging from the side of the car. I’m guessing that was just for display - and not for transportation.
According to the North Carolina Wildlife Department, there is a hunting season for Canada geese here. I suppose it is municipal restrictions that allow the monsters to proliferate nearby.
