I always thought the “Flat Earth Society” was a satirical, tongue-in-cheek, fun-loving, organization. I had no idea people took it seriously.

Me too, guess some people have no common sense. Well it is fun to watch them.

I saw some show segment on The History Channel about a Flat-Earth Society, probably in the 1920s. Kalifornia, of course.
They "proved" it by using a level on a set of boards that they kept alternatively extending on a beach.
The endeavor lasted about 500 yards or so, from what I remember, and then the combination of intellects that rivaled Einstein, Columbus, and Newton, declared the Earth to be flat, and went home.
I think that the group dissolved after that.

With celebrities involved it’s got to be about keeping names in print

Cris Columbus actually had 4 ships. We don’t know the name of the 4th. It sailed over the edge.

It is fun to watch the crazies until they seize control of the universities and try to ram their craziness down our throats as “science”. :-(

Me am not enjoying reading about Bizarros.
Alan Moore actually made Bizarro creepy and tragic in his story, "Whatever happened to the Man of Tomorrow?"

It certainly was, the original flat-earth website was an obvious in-joke.

When you can get people to believe things that are demonstrability false you can make them believe anything.

Flat earthers are people who aren't intellectually able to handle scientific subjects, but envy the confidence and competence of people who are.
Unable to compete with them and frustrated as a result, they try to remove the sting of inadequacy by convincing themselves they can undercut the foundations of scientific discipline by forcing their intellectual betters to admit that something obvious and universally accepted "cannot be proved."
In fact, all they're really doing is demonstrating that they can't understand a simple and obvious fact that can be directly observed only by inference. In other words, their arguments only serve to demonstrate how dull they are.
Yet another manifestation of the Dunning-Kruger effect, something we've become all too familiar with during the eight Obama years.
