Mormons are posthumously baptizing Holocaust victims as well as grandparents of public figures like Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Steven Spielberg, despite church rules intended to restrict the ceremonies to a member's ancestors, according to a researcher who has spent two decades monitoring the church's massive genealogical database.

This was a big issue awhile ago. The LDS promised to put a stop to it.

Baptism of the dead is NOT a practice sanctioned by the Bible.

Big batch of stories like this in 2012. Religious cultists lie. Hardly news.

If it has no true effect, it’s harmless.

Really bumps up the yearly “converts” count, though.

As I sez, it does ticks people off - that’s an effect.

“Baptism of the dead is NOT a practice sanctioned by the Bible.”

does this fit:

1 Corinthians, Chapt 15: Verse 29—

“Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?”

Meaningless mumbo-jumbo to me, but I don’t care and accept it in the spirit meant.

and I don’t believe they are really baptizing the dead. That would involve digging them up. So this is baptism by proxy. Which is essentially someone getting baptized themselves and imagining they are a proxy.

Well, I have no doubt that some Mormons are bonafide descendents of Holocaust victims, so what's the problem?

Likewise: Some Mormons are likely descended from ancestors they have in common with Trump, Spielberg, etc.

This is nothing new.

I have known and been friends with a lot of Mormons over the year. They are mostly good people. I wonder how many of them realize some of the weird practices going due to orders from headquarters in SLC.

This practice is widely known and derided enough to have a nickname: “dead dunking.” My paternal seventh great grandfather has been dead dunked multiple times judging by erroneous records in the LDS database, they have hime all over the place, even in NC in 1660 (he wasn’t, he was barely off the boat in St. Mary’s City, MD). I know why, a branch of the family converted and went west prior to the Civil War. He was a devout man, professed himself pardoned for his sins and forgiven by the Lord in his last will and testament. Sort of insulting actually. I can see why Holocaust victims are upset, it implies that they were deficient and hell-bound without Mormon intervention, as if Mormons are some bastion of sinlessness.

I am sure that G-d is very angry about their attempt to force their religion on the dead, who cannot resist. Fortunately, they are working with empty shells, while the actual soul has gone on to its reward. So, they are merely necrophiliacs. Really really sick people.
