What the Bible really says
EDITOR: Letter-writer Dean Davis says, “the God of the Bible thunders against things like abortion” (Letters, Saturday).
Many fundamentalist Christians unfortunately believe that the Bible condemns abortion. Not so, perhaps because abortion was so widely practiced and accepted in Biblical times.
There are many extremely vague Biblical passages which pro-lifers infer to be God’s position on abortion. Ironically in the Bible’s 1,700-plus pages, with slews of common human practices like eating pork getting condemned, abortion is never mentioned. Not once.
In one noteworthy passage (Numbers 5: 11-28), God sanctions and literally causes an abortion (for a woman who’s been unfaithful to her husband).
The Southern Baptists originally applauded Roe v Wade back in the 1970s. Unfortunately some in the Republican Christian right disapproved of this and turned abortion into a political rallying cry.
A majority of Americans and religions believe God has no “position” on abortion but rather gives us “free will” and his love for making the best decision possible when these difficult and frequently “no-win” situations arrive in our lives. Those who think they know what God wants and try to dissuade and/or thwart women from freely making their own private, spiritual decisions do them — and society — a grave harm.

There is no moral or ethical difference between killing a child in the womb or out of the womb. One is legal, the other not, but the result is still a dead child. Scientifically speaking, the child is a separate and aware human being regardless of its location.
Women have the choice to not become pregnant. Children have no choice on whether they are conceived.

Well, the name of the paper is “The Press Democrat” and it’s located in Sonoma County, California. Looking at the other letters to the editor, the demographic spectrum seems to range from moderate leftist to harcore stalinist.
In the original Hebrew in Genesis 9:6, ‘shofekh dam ha-adam ba-adam damo yishafekh’, God declares that whoever sheds another man’s blood should be killed. The expression ‘ba-adam’ is understood to mean ‘within man’, that is, even in the course of a pregnancy.

I don’t know what the “Mendocino” at the end of the article means but we should all know what they grow plenty of in Mendocino County and he is likely overdosing on the product!
Two im0portant points
First ‘thou shalt not kill’ is one word it is Ratcha in the ancient Hebrew, it means, no taking of defenseless human life.
Second is the word seed in Leviticus 20:1-5. Seed in the bible has the same meaning as ‘posterity’ in the Preamble of both the Constitutions of Maine and the USA.

Yes, God grants the gift of Life to a baby so that its mother can decide to take it away because it’s inconvenient.

Jesus said, ‘Anyone who receives a child in my name, receives me.’ By adopting a child, these couples receive Jesus but, by aborting a child, a couple refuses to receive Jesus.”
“From here, a sign of care for the weakest of the weak — the unborn child — must go out to the world. If you become a burning light of justice and peace in the world, then really you will be true to what the founders of this country stood for. God bless you!”
