World unites against North Korea nuke ambitions

North Korea's friends and enemies joined forces Friday in opposing its determination to be recognized as a nuclear weapons state and calling on leader Kim Jong Un to negotiate the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula -- but the North gave no sign of budging on its nuclear ambitions.

In a very rare appearance by a North Korean at the U.N. Security Council, Ambassador Ja Song Nam told a ministerial meeting that the country's possession of nuclear weapons was "an inevitable self-defensive measure" to defend the country against "the U.S. nuclear threat and blackmail."

Ja never mentioned the possibility of talks. Instead, he called the council meeting "a desperate measure plotted by the U.S. being terrified by the incredible might of our republic that has successfully achieved the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force."

He pointed to the Nov. 29 launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, which experts say could reach the U.S. mainland.

South Korea's Vice Foreign Minister Cho Hyun told the council that North Korea is "in the final stages of nuclear weaponization" and warned that if it can put a nuclear warhead on an intercontinental ballistic missile "it will fundamentally alter the security landscape in the region and beyond."

He urged the international community to grasp the urgency of the threat this poses and find ways to halt the North's nuclear program -- including by maximizing pressure and uniting in answering "absolutely no" to North Korean attempts to be recognized as a nuclear-weapons state.

We have made numerous agreements with North Korea concerning their nuclear programs in the past during the Clinton Administration. North Korea gained much aid from the United States and South Korea on these deals. These agreements were good if North Korea did not violate them, Clinton was a fool. Clinton made the deal and North Korea in effect told him to stuff the deal up his ass. Clinton did nothing and Obama was even worse.

Our bargaining position with North Korea should be very simple. Agree with the agreements we made or face military might. That is all they understand.

Then there is the rocket fuel production. Where do they get that? Make it in a home brew plant? Where do the precursors come from? Who supplied the brewing instructions?

It’s difficult to believe that a country of 25 million can be totally, technologically self sufficient.

There have got to be pressure points to shut them down.

Face military might? That means war, and who wants war with N. Korea?

It’s pretty clear why the N. Koreans want nukes. I know they bluster about attacking the USA, but nukes are defensive in nature. A non-nuclear state is at a clear disadvantage against a nuclear one, but two nuclear states are stabilized by threats of mutual destruction, aka MAD.

In a sense, nuclear weapons limit and prevent war. That’s why we didn’t go head to head against the USSR so much as engage in proxy fights.

I don’t think a nuclear N. Korea means the USA gets nuked. They know we have the power to completely wipe them out with or without nukes. However, a nuclear N. Korea could retaliate against the US homeland, and even with near perfect “Star Wars” defenses, the USA could suffer severe damage. So that means—from a Nork perspective—they are finally secure.

I know we have no intention of ever attacking a non-nuclear N. Korea, but THEY don’t know that. That’s why they want the great equalizer: nuclear weapons. We just need to decide if it’s worth going to war to stop them, because that’s probably the only way they will be stopped at this point.

Agreed. I remember reading General MacArthur said he vomited when he saw what we did to North Korea.
