Golfer, 87, defies odds to win club's competition beating younger players who 'can't keep up with him'

Fellow club members say he's more like a two-year-old rather than 87!

Age is just a number when it comes to playing golf, a Swansea pensioner has proved, after defying all odds to win a club competition.

Eighty-seven-year-young Graham Davies was the most consistent scorer throughout the summer period between March and September, at Burry Port’s Ashburnham Golf Club’s Stags section, defeating much younger team mates to win the ‘Summer League Shield’, and will be recognised with a presentation on December 19.

Mr Davies, of Gorseinon , has been a member of the club for the last 54 years, and said one of the secrets to success at his late age was healthy living and exercise.

“When I got older I wanted to be competitive,” he said.

“I’ve always done lots of exercise and my main aim has been to keep fit as long as I can.

“There are not many people playing golf at my age but that does not phase me.

“I can still go round walking the entire course instead of using the buggies.

“Myself and my two brothers are all still alive, one of them is 90.

“We were all good sportsmen in our time."

Mr Davies added: “When I was younger I played with some old members and I used to think they were an embarrassment.

“I always felt when I got to their age I wanted to be different and I wanted people to appreciate playing with me.”

Secretary of the section, Ivor Wilson said Mr Davies was one of their most active members.

“Graham is 87 but is like a two-year-old!” he said.

“He’s just won a competition where he’s beat myself and others way younger than him.

“He really looks after himself well and has got great memories of the club through the years and has seen all the pros in the past playing at the club.

“He is unbelievable. He is a very respectable guy and everyone has got the highest regard for him.

“He always takes it all in his stride.

“He never uses the buggies and walks the whole 18 holes. We can’t keep up with him.

“He’s got a great competitive spirit.”

18 holes is around a 10 mile walk. Good for him.

Third hole, hard dogleg to the left. 20 something teeing up to drive safe.

Old man:*When I was your age, I drove over the trees.

Younger guy the hits off the tee box and into the trees.

Old man *Well, when I was your age, those trees were six feet tall.
