Plunging temperatures have one very definite upside - they can change the landscape into a winter wonderland.
And lakes and rivers can be transformed into beautiful natural ice rinks.
These mesmerising images, from China to Canada with Europe in-between, show rinks that are all a paradise for skaters.
And photographers, too, of course.

But if I could have included them, I would have voted for:
The region of Ostergotland looks like a perfect Christmas scene as fir trees and small wood cabins surround the frozen lakes
Lake Vanern is the largest lake in Sweden and the third-largest in Europe and freezes over in plunging temperatures each year
Dotted over 22,000 islands, the natural ice rink is popular with explorers wanting to discover the rugged landscape
Oh well...growing old ain't for sissies!
Ping?
Is this how I should be doing it?
My 90 year old grandfather says the same thing: getting old aint for sissies.
My brother went ice skating twice. Broke his arm both times.
I’m so sorry you can’t skate now, and so glad you have so many good memories.
My ice skating days are over since I moved to Tucson. I hated the cold weather on Long Island, but I enjoyed ice skating on the lakes.
Skated the Namekagon in Northern Wisconsin many times as a child. Beautiful skateing only occurred a few times a year, when the river flowed over existing ice, then froze smooth.
Fantastic when it happened.
Hang on...Phoenix has an NHL team but there's no ice skating in Tucson? ;-)
I played ice hockey for most of my youth. After moving to Texas I started playing men’s league. Best ice skating is still lake louise marie upstate NY. The only problem was skating around all the fishing holes.
I LOVE Ice skating!!
We would clear of the snow to form trails on the ice, then we would “Zamboni” the ice to glass with water and brooms and line the trails with luminaria candles for night skating.
I do own that movie. I should think of it for a Christmas video.
Saving
Yeah Ice fishing holes throw a wrench in it LOL
We used bales of hay for goals, Cut the fish hole on the backside and you can sit on the goal to fish.
All I owned was hockey skates
We did Lake Louise a few years ago, it was gorgeous.
You Should.
It’s My FAVORITE Christmas movie!
