A lawyer who spent six months on the run after pleading guilty in a $500 million Social Security fraud scheme was being flown back to Kentucky on Tuesday after he was caught outside a Pizza Hut in Honduras.
Eric Conn was handed over to the FBI after his capture by a SWAT team as he left the restaurant in the coastal city of La Ceiba. Spokesman Jorge Galindo of the country’s Technical Agency of Criminal Investigation said they left Honduras on a private plane. Conn was expected to arrive in Lexington, Kentucky, late Tuesday afternoon.
“As promised, Mr. Conn will now be held accountable for his actions, the people he deceived and the lives he shattered, including all the victims of his greed in eastern Kentucky,” said Amy Hess, special agent in charge of the Louisville field office for the FBI.

Oftentimes the jokes write themselves.
I’m more surprised that there is a pizza hut in Honduras.
I am surprised that a guy with that kind of money would eat in a Pizza Hut.
For a Conn man, he did not hide too well.
But I’m sure the judge who granted him bail has been fired, right?

Article lead plays up that he defrauded the poor and disenfranchised but to me it sounds like they were willing accomplices in Social Security fraud claims:

And the judge and doctor who took bribes were co-conspirators. And what of the poor “victims” who made the claims of disability that required such scams?
“Among his former clients in the impoverished coalfields of eastern Kentucky and West Virginia are many people with legitimate disabilities.”
Legitimate such that they needed a quack and a bribed judge. Right.
Here’s a tip, don’t go to telelawyers who wave money around promising you BIG RETURNS on your call.

I thought the same and then remembered how much our President likes Big Mac’s and Filet O’ Fish.

They were getting The Disability for people who aren’t disabled. I know several of them. All you need to a doctor and a lawyer who are willing to get paid. The lawyer backdates the application and collects everything to the present date.
Conn missed his calling. He should be in Congress.
There is a Pizza Hut and a Burger King next to Toncontin airport. I know some people from Honduras, and someday I want to fly down there just to say I flew into Toncontin and then text them pictures of me eating at that Pizza Hut.

If he got away with it so long, it’s quite possible that a lot of the cases were legitimate. The bribes greased the skids. Obviously some (perhaps most) were outright fraudulent, and others may be marginal.
For the ones that are marginal or legit, they probably now have to go through the entire application process again, which can take years, if you don’t break the law. So many in that bunch are actually screwed by this.
