My thought is that Flynn was very much aware of the Democrats “collusion’ accusations flying around at the time and he decided that he was not going to give them anything that they would try to twist and characterize as collusion. So he decided not to bring up his conversations with the Russian ambassador even though those discussions were of no consequence. He was being too protective of the President and, in retrospect, bad judgment on his part. If he had been straight up, absolutely nothing would have come of the matter. Flynn's intentions were good but wrong headed. Sort of like Ollie North who decided to turn the shredders on to get rid of the Contra docs. Military guys are loyal to a fault and some times are too willing to fall on their sword for their superior.

Keep in mind that Flynn's plea negotiations no doubt included a binding proffer as to what he would testify to in consideration for a reduced sentence. We may be guessing, but Mueller and his team have a pretty good idea of what and whom Flynn will deliver. I see Flynn as offering up two plausible lines of testimony to Mueller.
Flynn might testify that Kushner and/or Trump told him to keep his contacts with the Russians secret. And Flynn may also say that he lied to the FBI about those contacts in the belief that he was following Trump's desire that he do so. Such a claim by Flynn could put Kushner and Trump into the crosshairs for charges of conspiracy and subornation of perjury.
In addition, or more likely, in the alternative, Flynn may provide testimony about his work for foreign interests that include Turkey and some shady Russians. In essence, Flynn did lobbying and influence peddling that crossed ethical and legal boundaries. No doubt others are involved, and Mueller could do much to justify not indicting Kusher and making an impeachment referral on Trump if he caught some nogoodniks who were clearly working against America's laws and interests on behalf of one or more foreign powers.

Thank you, your advice will make it into one of my upcoming sermons.

Whatever Flynn says should be viewed through the following filter:
Flynn was fired for lying to the Vice President.
Flynn pled guilty to lying to the FBI.
He has no credibility now at all.
