Excellent observations.

The way cats dig a hole, then defecate in to it, and then bury it, scooping dirt from both sides of the hole is intelligent but is not taught or learned. It’s pure instinct.

I’ve had my morning barf and cringe already.

“Cats do walk through feces and urine in litter boxes and then track it around the house.”

That’s only because the litter box is an abnormal and unnatural constraint put on them. Even then, they bury their waste in a litter box, just like they do outside under natural circumstances.

The scenario you describe above is due to owners not cleaning their litter boxes. A cat would never do that under normal circumstances.

Uh, one of our cats DOES know the word “treat”....also knows the word “outside”....he loves to go into our back yard...under supervision. I have tried teaching him to “SIT” for his treats....that he does NOT seem to get.

You’re very welcome. And most cats won’t demean themselvee doing tricks for inferior, servant species like humans. They leave the menial work for the dogs.

Do mean if they were running around wild?

“Do mean if they were running around wild?”

No. Just being allowed to go outside and do it.

Litter box makes them do it in the same place, which they wouldn’t do outside. They bury their poo and pee even in a litter box.

If owners don’t clean the litter box, what are they supposed to do?

We have six cats and have to spell in front of them in some cases.

Agreed. Unfortunately, this is how most cats live - and spread germs.

My cats have learned that when my wife calls me from the kitchen they should get off my lap because I'm going to get up and go to dinner.

Yeah. It makes cats more neurotic than they naturally are.

For instance, I had an Aussie for a number of years and at the mention of the words “outside” or “Treat” they would react appropriately because they recognized those words.

Here's a word that all dogs seem to know:

Wow that’s crazy, but neat. I have never seen that in my house, and I have actively tried to get my cats to respond to verbal communication. If you say their name they will look at you, or come to the room, but that’s about it. I can even go into the kitchen and grab a bag of anything at all and move it around, but if I so much as bump a bag of their treats they come running lol.
