Remember that, before the A-Bombs, we had conducted almost unmolested strategic bombing of Japan from June ‘44 to August ‘45. Their defenses could not reach our high altitude B-29s. The most commonly cited estimate of Japanese casualties from the raids is 333,000 killed and 473,000 wounded, but other estimates put total fatalities in the 241,000 to 900,000 range. The loss was mostly civilian life, but the raids contributed to a large decline in industrial production.
The fanatics would not quit in the face of assured destruction. It took the 2 A-Bombs to finish them off.
Not many Presidents had the guts Truman did. He served his 4 years and went back home.
He said “the buck stops here” and it did. He took the unprecedented action of dropping the bomb/bombs to stop a war from being carried out by our military on two fronts.. he said we were war weary and had lost too many men and did not want to fight another one in the pacific. It was a hard thing to do, and today the liberal media/left would have a fit . they are too used to having it all and no sacrifice.
