BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (AP) - Authorities say a child accidentally locked himself inside a gun safe at a farm supply store in West Virginia.
Green Valley Volunteer Fire Department Chief David Thompson told news outlets that the 8-year-old boy locked himself in at the Rural King store inside the Mercer Mall in Bluefield on Saturday afternoon.

People on the comment section locally are saying the mom was not watching the kid and the sister was pushing him in the safe.

Classic O. Henry story — “A Retrieved Reformation”.
Why does it not have an internal release in case someone gets locked in? Generally these days such a thing would have a release on the inside to prevent someone from getting sealed in.
If a person can fit in it, then a person is going to end up locked in it. Like a car trunk, or a refrigerator, or one of those walk-in meat lockers.

Drill small hole, insert wire hanger, open safe door. Sort of defeats the purpose of a safe. Besides there ae not too many people stupid enough to lock themselves in a gun safe.
He’s a pistol!
Son of a gun!
Great story. I read OHenry in the Army. Got to get back to reading that. I had a whole book of his short stories. There was one about a dog walker in NYC, too. It’s hillarious. Can’t remember the title. Thanks for the memories.
That could be potentially fatal, no?
I’d have to imagine fire-proof safes are also air-tight. Unless the sealant only activates at high temperatures.

Rural King just opened near here. Looks like a lot of good stuff.
I don,t know of any gun safes that are capable of turning the locking bolts and spinning the combination dial from the inside. Somebody (sibling) locked the kid in the safe.
The story have the paperwork for the safe including the combination?
The same thing happened to the son of a friend of ours. Mom, two boys shopping at Walmart...Mom not watching and older son locks younger son in a gun safe. Made the local news. We all had a laugh. Older son got his hide tanned real good.
We just got one too. Been there and they do have good stuff. Even a Sthil dealer.
Hmmm....comment was on article thread also.
Why don’t the stores have immediate access to the combo’s for each safe on display?
The combo is either 25-50-25 or 50-25-50, this is so that he sales people can always open a safe. When you get it home you have the combo changed. Or you should...
A pal of mine forgot his combo and was amazed that I could open the safe- he didn’t change it from the factory default!
Stores need to be cognizant of the potential problems display items present. While at a big box home improvement store, my stepson proudly announced to his mom that he went poopie like a big boy. “Irv, clean up in plumbing.”

Thank God she confessed(I presume). Otherwise could have been a much different and ghastly story.
