I hate height-——and hated the Hana Highway-———and 2 others that I found myself on in my lifetime———and I was a passenger each time.

Lindbergh is buried in Hana, I believe. We lived on Maui for a few years and I would never even consider driving - or riding - to Hana.

I completely agree! Saddleback road on the Big Island is also a fun drive :)

I broke the rental car rules (which they CIRCLE) about not driving on unpaved roads and took the back way back to the hotel. This was the 90s some of it was rough but I made it through by following what appeared to be tire trails from hay trucks or somesuch drove through farmland with cows and the like.I did the same thing about 3 years ago...Glad I did it but won't be doing that again...

I remember that. I did the same thing but not on the road to Hana. I drove around the northwest part of the island, from Kapalua back down to Kahului. I took it slow, so no problems with the rental car -- and I got some truly amazing photographs. Breathtakingly beautiful up there.
