On a long road trip, one Sunday, nothing was open but a grocery store.
When CT had Blue Laws, the supermarkets were closed, but gas stations and drug stores were open, as were restaurants. A modern drug store may as well be a small grocery store, ditto many gas stations.

In our area of western NY in the ‘50s, on Sunday everything was closed except gas stations. If you needed to get medicine in an emergency, a phone number was posted on the drug store’s door telling you who to call.
