A Canadian mom has been sentenced to three years in prison after her 7-year-old son, who was suffering from a severe strep throat infection, died because she failed to take the boy to the doctor, according to reports. Tamara Lovett, 48, of Calgary was found guilty in January of criminal negligence causing death in the passing of her son, Ryan, CBC News reported.
When Ryan developed the strep infection that left him bedridden in 2013, Lovett tried to treat him using home remedies of dandelion tea and oil of oregano for 10 days before he died, the court had heard.
...
Lovett called 911 on March 2, 2013, but Ryan was already dead by the time emergency responders got to the home. The mother had testified that she thought Ryan had a cold or the flu.
Doctors, during testimony, said that Ryans infection would have been treatable with antibiotics.

Sounds like a mentally ill Liberal.. Her poor son.. May he rest in peace.
I would get strep about two or three times a year back in the late 60s sick as i have ever been mom always took me to get a shot of penicillin or some kinda antibiotic my dentist told her he had never seen tonsils so jacked up had them yanked out in 69 never had strep again prayers up for the kid what a horrible way to go
My aunt died of strep throat before my mother was born.
In those days, antibiotics were not an option.
There is no reason for such a death today. Poor kid.
When I was growing up we hardly ever went to the doctor. In fact I never saw one until I had a check up for football in the 9th grade.
One time my parents didn’t take me to the doctor for a throat infection until I passed out. Whatever the H it was, I missed 2 weeks of school and it took at least 2 months to really get over.
And if she had taken him to the doctor and he only had the flu they would scold her for bringing him and wasting state resources.
I can see how letting strep throat go too long can be dangerous because it can turn into a wildfire, but I also know how easy it can be to let it go...it depends on how much you can stand. (I know in this case the mother tried to treat the kid with her own herbal remedies...I am all for herbal stuff if adults want it, but I think kids should see a physician)
When I was in the USN, I got a sore throat that got worse and worse to the point I couldn’t eat, sleep drink, or even talk.
I couldn’t even swallow my own saliva. And I was sick and dizzy.
I just didn’t want to go to Sick Call.
I came in, and when I couldn’t speak, he just said “Go to Sick Bay”. Not a request, either.
So I was semi-delerious and walked across the base, sat there for about an hour, and now that I was reconciled to the fact I really was well and truly sick, I began to suffer as I hadn’t allowed myself to before.
Finally, they called me in, didn’t even see a doctor, just a Corpsman, and they didn’t even give me anything. Nothing at all. Just took a throat swab and sent me back to work.
I was in pretty bad shape, but I didn’t hear for them for three or four days, when they called and said I had to report to sick bay because I had to get a shot of penicillin for strep throat.
By then, I had already bottomed out and was starting to get better, and being the notorious hater of needles, simply ignored them.
That was about a week and a half of sheer misery. The last three or four days were like the worst hangover constantly with borderline delirium layered on top of it. I suspect I could have simply passed out in my room in the barracks (I had a room all to myself...a rarity, it was a bunk stuffed in an oddly shaped room) and they wouldn’t have found me until they sent someone when I didn’t report for muster.
The biggest problem with “herbal” remedies is that in spite of sometimes clear POSSIBILITIES of certain beneficial properties (actually from certain chemicals found in the herb), there are no clinically derived and authoritative scientific standards on quality, application, dosage, interactions, side effects and other important matters. It’s a crap shoot and part of why, to a higher degree than “prescription” drugs, the reported results are inconsistent and hit or miss.
I have used ginger with a sore throat - sucking on a small piece of ginger or making a ginger tea with lemon. I would not make any claim it “cures” a sore throat. I think it most likely makes the throat “feel” better while my body’s natural defenses get the real healing done. Of course that is not the same as a “strep” throat which involves a more serious streptococcus infection. Any sore throat with fever lasting 48 hours deserves a test for streptococcus infection which needs an antibiotic.
"Rheumatic fever is an inflammatory disease that can develop as a complication of inadequately treated strep throat or scarlet fever."
Exactly. And from what I hear, if you let strep throat reach a certain bacterial level, it can rocket exponentially and kill you.
I was just young and stupid.
exactly- yet you see the ads all the time “New herbal breakthrough doctors don’t want you to know about’ or ‘Studies show this to be more effective than (fill in hte blank)’
And you have the ‘natural only’ crowd that insists all they need are ‘natural remedies’ (like Mick Dodge or whatever that fruitloop’s name is) who keeps claiming that he’s ‘curing’ things with herbs- but gives no proof he even has the conditions-
You’ll even see claims such as ‘high dose vit C works better than chemo’ UGGGH!
The ‘natural only’ crowd is very cult like- but like you say- very few actual scientific studies have been done, and the ones that have been done do NOT support most of the claims for certain herbs and conditions (There are a few that do- but very few- and certainly not for serious medical conditions)
colloidal silver
wife had strep when she first met me
white bumps on throat- fever
had her gargle CS
it all went =away in 2-4 hrs
shes never been sick since (15 yrs)
cheers
be careful of colloidal silver as it can turn your skin permanently blue- a condition called argyria- several people have experienced it-
What is argyria?
Argyria is a permanent blue-gray discoloration of the skin and deep tissues. It can result from using colloidal silver products.
What other risks are there from colloidal silver products?
Apart from argyria, the NCCAM says colloidal silver products may cause side effects including “neurologic problems (such as seizures), kidney damage, stomach distress, headaches, fatigue, and skin irritation,” and that colloidal silver may hamper the body’s absorption of certain drugs (penacillamine, quinolones, tetracyclines, and thyroxine).

sheesh ~~~~~~~~~~ I mean, you can take too much of something.
Or not.
The only thing I got sick from was the Mumps, Measles, Oh Chicken Pocks I really wasn’t sick with the Chicken Pocks but I couldn’t go to school because I had 12 pocks on me.
The thing with Colloidal though is that it can happen ‘out of the blue’ so to speak= not something i want to even mess with- not even a little- just like with quinine, even just a little can cause severe reactions in some people-
And if he had died waiting three weeks to see a doctor on the national health service, who would be going to jail?
Didn’t Sieve Jobs try to cure his cancer by drinking kale smoothies?
I am a proponent of Colloidal Silver and have been roundly mocked and attacked on FR for my stance.
