This is the second fatal mishap in Icons, an aircraft made for idiots to fly. The marketing shows it flying low over the water, but that doesnt mean everybody should do it.

He liked to fly close to the waves because it felt like flying a fighter jet.
Guess he got a little too close.

Charlie Morton, who copied Halladay’s mechanics on the mound, is still with us.
RIP to one of the best in my time.

I know nothing about the plane except for the information that was linked to the story. I think it is interesting that the manufacturer promotes it as having an auto-like cockpit and dashboard. I'm going to go way out on a limb here and speculate that it might not be a good idea to design things to suggest an auto dashboard and controls. This could be inexperienced pilot related, could be new production model aircraft related (haven't got the kinks out of the new for 2018 models...), but I am wondering if there shouldn't be a critical subliminal influence of the familiar layout of a car's controls. Perhaps when things get hairy you react as if it was a car, and that may be the opposite of the action you should take knowing it is a plane. Jus' sayin'...
