The Red Cross has uncovered several cases of fraud by officials during efforts to combat the Ebola outbreak that struck West Africa in 2014-2016, estimating losses of $6 million (€5.2 million).

In a statement, the Geneva-based International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said it was “outraged”, and said it would “ensure any staff involved are held to account.”

The Ebola virus killed more than 11,300 people and infected an estimated 29,000, mainly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

The IFRC said the operations set up to contain the outbreak “were among the most complex in recent humanitarian history,” with several groups moving quickly to deploy staff and mobilize volunteers, and spending tens of millions of dollars on medical equipment and other supplies. …

Giving money to third world countries based on humanitarian needs and it ends up in a dictator strongman’s pockets. That’s why they will always remain third world countries!

The IFRC said the operations set up to contain the outbreak “were among the most complex in recent humanitarian history,” with several groups moving quickly to deploy staff and mobilise volunteers, and spending tens of millions of dollars on medical equipment and other supplies.

In Sierra Leone, it said it had found evidence of “likely collusion” between former IFRC employees and a bank, leading to a potential loss of $2.1 million. Overbilling and fake invoices by a provider of customs clearance services in Guinea cost the organisation $1.2 million, and two other investigations in the country are under way.

The IFRC also said it had previously found that in Liberia, inflated prices for relief items and payroll costs had cost it $2.7 million

normal operations in Africa.....................

But why is this being exposed? New leadership or current leadership not getting their take?

I remember some big natural disaster here, in the United States — might have been Hurricane Katrina — where the Red Cross went on a full-court press for urgent donations, a national fund drive with lots of TV ads, lots of pictures and video of the devastation, people stranded on rooftops, babies crying in shelters, and then it came out in the months after that they had spent a substantial percentage of it on a new networked computer system for the entire organization.

The money didn’t disappear. It was used for kickbacks both to African officials and first-world Red Cross officials to decorate their plush offices and pay for their staff, etc.

Happens every time there’s a crisis. The media plays up the Red Cross and a bunch of donations go “missing”.

The Red Cross was giving away $400 cash to anyone who asked for it in a Wal Mart in Houston just after the recent floods. You could drive in from your 8th floor condo, unscathed and collect. I’ll never give to the Red Cross.

In the Tulsa flood of 1976, we received from the Red Cross a mattress and box spring set. That was it. Oh yes, a McDonald burger.
