NEW YORK - Sales growth at Papa John's (PZZA) is slowing, and the pizza chain is blaming it on the outcry surrounding NFL players kneeling during the national anthem and falling NFL ratings.
The company, which is a sponsor and advertiser of the NFL, said customers have a negative view of the chain's association with the NFL. The company also cut its earnings growth expectations for the year and Papa John's stock fell about 10 percent Wednesday.
"NFL leadership has hurt Papa John's shareholders," said the chain's CEO, John Schnatter, in a call with analysts Wednesday. "This should have been nipped in the bud a year and a half ago."

Get used to it John, the NFL is going to continue to screw you & your shareholders.
John should switch to Hockey, baseball or NASCAR.
Or maybe your pizzas TOTALLY suck.
Worst ever.
Even dominos beats these guys hands down.
People buy their crap for the name only ‘Pappa John’s’...got a nice ring to it but that’s were it stops.
Totally cheap on the toppings. Basically a step up from Little Ceasers.
And you probably shouldn’t stand too close to Peyton Manning these days - who is in some sort of ancient sex scandal - but a scandal, none-the-less.
Doesn’t Manning OWN some of Papa John’s? Maybe you should look into that aspect of your ‘Bidness Plan’ as well?
What’s stopping him from just severing ties with the NFL? Doing so his sales will skyrocket.
Papa John’s doesn’t skimp on the cheese.
Or the salt for that matter.
Papa Protester’s Pizza Pathos
This is where the NFL is headed...Gary Glitter roamed the world looking for a country to take him. The NFL have let their product commit acts that - while not pedophilia - are off-putting to the fans. You can't walk that back.
When Papa John’s pulls it’s ads, I’ll start buying their pizzas again.
I’ll bet outfits like Jersey Mikes and similar companies are seeing a downturn as well. I used to look forward to getting a sub from Jersey Mike’s on a Sunday, sitting down watching the games and enjoying the down time. Now it’s been yard and house work with Saturday steak left overs for lunch. The weather is supposed to be nice this Sunday and am considering putting the Christmas lights up.....
bunk they changed the cheese and it seems the changed the flour.
if they put in cellulose that is just a PC way of not say they put sawdust in the flour.
(cellulose is chemically “cleaned” sawdust)
Not good when the NFL sponsors are raising the alarm. This is just one sign of many that things are going good for the NFL.
He’s correct that the NFL is hurting his sales, but his disgusting pizza has to take some of the blame.
They all are. Franchise means variation of results.
If they pulled their ads as soon as the protests escalated, and then instead bought spots on Rush and Hannity and got pressers out to announce their reasons for changing their ad buys, then their sales and stock prices would have soared, despite their lousy pizza.
Wonder who will buy this time? And for how much?
A decade ago, they made lousy pizzas. Around 2011, they revised everything. Pizzas improved.
