After violating a court order by calling and sending nasty text messages to his former girlfriend 144 times, a man was ordered to write 144 compliments about her.
For every nasty thing you said about her, youre going to say a nice thing, 2nd Circuit Judge Rhonda Loo told Daren Young. No repeating words.
Young, 30, was sentenced Friday after he had pleaded no contest to 16 counts of violating an order for protection. He was given credit for about five months he had spent in jail and was placed on two years probation.
In a court order issued Feb. 22, Young was ordered not to contact his ex-girlfriend, including by telephone. She had sought the order for protection.
On May 22, between 8:39 and 11:10 p.m., he violated the order by texting, calling and attempting to call her 144 times, according to police.
Shortly afterward, officers arrested Young at his residence in Kahului.
After spending 157 days in jail, Young had gotten the message, said Deputy Public Defender Zach Raidmae.
One hundred and fifty-seven days is a long time to think about what tasteless things were said and the importance of abiding by protective orders, Raidmae said.
The reality of this case is no texts, no problem, Raidmae said. Hes experienced the sting of not abiding by this.
In court, Young said he was sorry.
Im not going to do it again, he said. Im ready to move forward with my life, help my mom, who had a stroke.
Young said that he had let go already after he and the woman had broken up almost nine months ago.
Loo noted that Young sent the text messages within a three-hour period.
I dont know whether I should cut off your fingers or take away your phone to get you to stop texting, she said. You probably shouldnt get a phone, period. I hope she changed her number.
Deputy Prosecutor Carson Tani said he didnt know whether the woman had changed her phone number.
I know what number she has now and Im not going to say it, Tani said.
As part of his sentence, Young was ordered to pay $2,400 in fines and perform 200 hours of community service. He was ordered to write the 144 complimentary things about his ex-girlfriend within 144 days.
Its so childish to think a grown man can be so thumb-happy, Loo told Young. I hope you dont have a phone anymore and, if you do, I hope you dont have her number anymore.
Gay.
“Your love canal is wide enough for a flotilla of love boats to sail through it.”
Unconstitutional: Unusual punishment.
Here’s something nice he can say: For a fat person, you don’t sweat much.
Unfortunately most Americans don’t have the finances to fight government overreach in court.
“Thumb Happy”.
The girl he’s been calling may want to buy herself a little’ ol pearl handled pistol to keep in her pocket. This nutball is not done yet. Not likely to find any other girl who wants him, once they know his past.
Lips like cherries, skin like milk,
Your shell-like ears, your dainty hands,
And eyes so black, like frying pans
I guess that is why tar and feathers was used in olden days.
Cruel and unusual punishment.
I dont know whether I should cut off your fingers or take away your phone to get you to stop texting, she said. You probably shouldnt get a phone, period. I hope she changed her number.

Oh cut off his fingers, definitely. That’d be the approach I’d take.
#139 — You have a nice little nose; it’s not at all like your big fat ass.
“C’mon, judge! I’m tryin’! I only have 5 more to go and I’m running out of ideas!”
Unconstitutional: Unusual punishment.

Which? The 157 days he’s already spent in jail? Or the 144 compliments.
Maui. Wowee.
While what you say is true, it is irrelevant here. Maui is not in America.
When did that happen?
1980. I had some Maui back then. I smoked it all away.
Punishment can be cruel OR unusual, just not BOTH.
She’s got a pair of eyes, just like two custard pies
And when she looks at me, I sure get a thrill
She’s got a pair of lips, just like potato chips
...
She’s got a pair of legs, just like two whiskey kegs
And when they knock together, oh what a sound
She’s got a pair of hips, just like two battle ships
She’s got a bulbous nose, just like a big red rose
And when the lights go out, it really does shine
She wears silk underwear, I wear my latest pair
I’d gone with cruel: I would make him sit in a room with her giving him a piece of her mind for 24 hours straight.
