Trolly?
He misspelled trolley.
He was harkening back to the origin of the Dodgers nickname. They were named the Dodgers in Brooklyn, which was short for the original nickname of Trolley Dodgers. People would dodge the trolleys running down the streets of Brooklyn back in the day. Crossing the street then was difficult because the trolleys were in the streets.
Their original moniker.
The team name, Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers, was coined in 1895.The nickname was still new enough in September 1895 that a newspaper could report that “’Trolley Dodgers’ is the new name which eastern baseball cranks [fans] have given the Brooklyn club.” In 1895, Brooklyn played at Eastern Park, bounded by Eastern Parkway (now Pitkin Avenue), Powell Street, Sutter Avenue, Van Sinderen Street, where they had moved early in the 1891 season when the second Washington Park burned down.
Some sources erroneously report that the name “Trolley Dodgers” referred to pedestrians avoiding fast cars on street car tracks that bordered Eastern Park on two sides. However, Eastern Park was not bordered by street-level trolley lines that had to be “dodged” by pedestrians. The name “Trolley Dodgers” implied the dangers posed by trolley cars in Brooklyn generally, which in 1892, began the switch from horse-power to electrical power, which made them much faster, and were hence regarded as more dangerous. The name was later shortened to Brooklyn Dodgers.
The “Trolley Dodgers” name was later adopted by the team for the 1911 and 1912 seasons, and the “Dodgers” name was used in 1913.
Game 7... yep
Now, in New York, they dodge moslems.
I’m gonna’ LOVE it when my Dodgers take the series tomorrow night.
Go trolleys go!
Ooooooooo...... Too soon?
Reminds me a bit of the Pistons basketball nickname.
Originally they were the Ft. Wayne Zollner Pistons. Then was shortened to Pistons. Then eventually they moved from Ft. Wayne to Detroit, and have been the Detroit Pistons ever since.
Wow, I didn’t know that. I always figured they were named the ‘Pistons’ because Detroit is the city that makes automobiles. Motors have pistons ya’ know?
The Toledo Mud Hens have been the Mud Hens since 1903.
They were the Toledo Iron Men from 1916 to 1918, but became the Mud Hens again in 1919.
I wonder why.
Go Astros.
Come on Astros!
What’s a Zollner?
As a lifelong Cardinals fan, I’m rooting for Kate Upton’s boyfriend’s team.
Zollner was the name of the company which originally sponsored the Pistons basketball team in Ft. Wayne. I think that Zollner was the name of the guy who owned the company which made pistons for car and truck engines.
So it was an ad for the company, to call them the Ft. Wayne Zollner Pistons. They dropped the Zollner at some point and were just the Ft. Wayne Pistons. Then they kept the nickname when they moved to Detroit.
According to Wiki, it's the last name of the original owner, Fred Zollner. The Pistons part still fits for Detroit or Fort Wayne. Mr. Zollner owned a foundry business manufacturing pistons for car, truck and locomotive engines...
I don’t know about the Mud Hens. I’m sure every team has a history behind their nickname.
I can think of a few off the top of my head :
Chicago Bears were named after the Chicago Cubs.
Green Bay Packers were sponsored by a meat packing company originally.
Pittsburgh Steelers is in honor of the history of when Pittsburgh was a big steel producing city.
Buffalo Bills are named after Buffalo Bill Cody.
Detroit Lions was inspired by Detroit Tigers, both big felines.
Minnesota Twins are named after the twin cities they are located in.
Milwaukee Brewers are named after the historic status of Milwaukee as a major beer brewing city.
Colorado Rockies named after the Rocky Mountains.
Arizona Diamondbacks named after the snakes in the desert of Arizona.
“Chicago Bears were named after the Chicago Cubs.”
“After” - only in a ‘time’ sense.
Halas named them Bears because he wanted to be bigger.
