During the first full operational week of the northbound MoPac Express Lane, the most expensive transaction was $8.38 for the entire trip from downtown Austin to Parmer Lane. That peak cost happened on Thursday, Oct. 12.

A spokesperson for the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority says while that number may seem high, only a handful of people paid that price for a 3-minute window between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. that day.

The liberal ninnies in Austin were warned prices would be higher in peak time periods. $8.38 for 11 miles. Well, that'll pay off the toll road in no time. Yet another reason to avoid the blue stain that is Austin.

Take that city and shove it. Liberal rathole that sucks the life out of Texas.

Can anyone explain how the toll is calculated. It sounds like a variable price based on traffic?

"the most expensive transaction was $8.38 for the entire trip from downtown Austin to Parmer Lane."
And what city/state is Parmer Lane in?

I took the toll road around Austin just last Friday. It was the first time ever I actually had bumper to bumper traffic on 130. Very frustrating. I could not set the cruise at 85 mph as usual.

But still - I consoled myself with what I35 must have been like.

Yes, variable price based on traffic. Rush hour costs more than 2 am.

$8 morning rush hour and evening rush hour X 5 times a week = $80/wk. or one day of gross pay for someone making $10/hr.

130 does not allow waiving the toll for disabled vets.

Ah, thank you. So it’s a road for the wealthy. And the working class have to stay on I-35 huh? Only Austin could figure out a way to do segregation on the whole highway system. The bus thing was child’s play, apparently.

For $8 on that short trip, I would expect a 90 MPH police escort and a small piece of the road mounted to a lacquered cherry plaque with my name on it.

I don’t see the problem. Capitalistic solution to a public problem.
Supply-and-demand: some people are willing to pay more to bypass traffic; raise price until toll-lane density drops to speed-limit rate.
Without that toll, the general traffic flow would be about same, but leave the hurried no option.

Sometimes $8 for 11 miles in 11 minutes is worth it.
Those for whom it’s not worth it, well, free lanes are right there.

Nah. I was just rolling out a bunch of liberal puking points to make fun of Austin.

I lived there for about 4 years.

Currently, the peak hours toll on I-405 in King County, WA is $10. Lowest off-peak toll is $0.75.

I am so glad most people live in the concrete jungle. It gives me plenty of room to enjoy my 100 acres here in theWestern NC mountains. I live in the only county in NC that doesn’t have a McDonalds.
