Family of Minnesota Native Shot in Las Vegas Says He Had Divine Help

The Aurich's are a family of faith. And they have no doubt there was divine intervention in play to help get their son Phil to the people he needed to see and the places he needed to be. Phil Aurich, 36, was hit by a bullet during the mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Concert in Las Vegas on Oct. 1.

And the 12 days since have been unlike any other for his family.

But he made it out, thanks to his girlfriend's insistence on keeping running.

And thanks to a police officer, who was supposed to be setting up road blocks, but didn't - instead rushing Phil to the hospital.

"This policeman who was assigned to do this said 'Screw it' and took off with him," Phil's father Mike Aurich said.

"I don't know how long he would have lasted if he would have had to sit there and wait."

Mike believes his son was in God's hands.

And he said the miracle work continued when Phil arrived at the hospital. That's where he met Dr. Tim Dickhudt. "The bullet went in on his left side, and of course it did all that damage when it got inside," Mike said. "But Tim saw that, and said to the other surgeon, 'This guy's got to get on the table now.'"

How the Dickhudt and Aurich families are intertwined is a remarkable story.

"Tim's father John, who is a doctor here in town, and Mindy, my wife, went to grade school together," Mike said. "Then we found out Tim grew up in Woodbury, about 5 blocks from where we lived.

"Then it turns out my wife's mother and Tim's grandmother were good friends. It's so ironic. Mindy has a son and raises him to be shot. And John has a son and raises him to be the doctor (who cared) for him. You just can't get beyond that being a Godly thing."

Phil is now out of the ICU and recovering in Las Vegas - the city in which he now lives.

Although a reminder of that deadly night will forever stay lodged just one inch from his heart.

"I believe that was God's hands," Mike said. "He calls you when he is ready. And I don't know what he has in mind for Phil. But obviously, he has something left for Phil to do and he chose to spare him."

Phil's brother used to coach football with P.J. Fleck, now in his first year as head coach at the University of Minnesota.

Once he heard about Phil's injuries, Fleck sent a personal, motivational message.

His father said that was the first time his son smiled - or showed any emotion other than pain.

The family is hoping Phil will be out of the hospital soon.
