In ten days, it will mark the 28th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earth Quake. I recall it vividly from Oct. 17th, 1989.
Magnitude 6.9
Total Damage $5.7 Billion.
I was waiting for a train at a Bart Station in Walnut Creek, Ca. I have been waiting for ‘the other shoe to drop’ since that day.
When Loma Prieta hit, I was still at work in Mountain View (SW bay area). Basement secure area with 8-inch reinforced concrete walls and bank-vault style door. The false ceiling was 4-inch reinforced concrete suspended by wires from above.
My biggest worries were the false ceiling coming down, and the vault door jamming closed. Neither happened.
