The games started to become unwatchable several years ago as the time between plays starting resembling baseball with constant referee huddles, sock throwing and commercials.

From the 2 minute warning to the end of the game could take 25 minutes.

The allotted time for NFL games on TV is 3 hours and they typically run over by about 30 minutes per game. The game of course is 60 minutes per the game clock. Studies have been done to determine how much of that there is actual action on the field. It turns out it is approximately 11 minutes.
