The iPhone is a nice gadget, but without the infrastructure and computing power to support 100’s of millions of concurrent users accessing Facebook in the cloud, it’s really just an iPod.

Warmed over tech, eh? What do you the iCloud is? How about the Neural Engine inside ever iPhone 8 and X? Fastest mobile processors in the world. Nothing from Apple's competitors come anywhere close. Poorly crafted? Not from the reviews I've read. Rave reviews but questioning who the 8 is targeted toward. For me, that's not a question as it's selling out. The people it's targeted toward are the upgraders who don't need the cutting edge that is coming in the iPhone X.

Apple's 3D FaceID facial recognition is just "me too?" There is nothing out there that is like it. Samsung's facial recognition can be defeated by a photograph. Apple's cannot be defeated with any photo, 3D representation, or even the dead body. . . or even the living person who owns that iPhone who doesn't look at the iPhone with the intent of unlocking it. The iPhone uses a neural network processor that no other mobile platform has. . . capable of doing 600 Billion calculations per second. The data processor in the iPhone 8 and X are turning in bench marks that are the equivalent of the bench marks of the Intel i5s in the MacBook Pro. That is impressive in a cellular phone. As I said, nothing in the competition is anywhere CLOSE. That is NOT "warmed over 6-12 month old 'Innovations,' pburgh01, no matter how much you hold your breath and wish they were.

Do you go to sleep at close to the same time every night?

I don't. I'm one of those rare persons who still has a land line, so I can always be reached. Each night, I put my iPhone in airplane mode. No disturbances from my iPhone (plus it keeps its full charge until morning). Anyway, you're right, people can simply play with the settings to achieve different results.

You don't need to put your iPhone in airplane mode at night. Just set the Do Not Disturb, and be done with it. Allow your messages to come through with no disturbances. . . You can still call out if you want. Set a time for when it is inappropriate for people to disturb you and set that as when you won't be bothered.

I don't go to bed until the wee hours of the morning, but my iPhone Do Not Disturb is set for 9PM. The only people who can get me after that are close family and friends whom I've put in my VIP list or someone who dials my number twice in succession with a short period and they better have their tail end on fire.

I already use the Do Not Disturb Schedule function. It’s just that on Airplane mode, my iPhone doesn’t use up charge. I don’t keep it on a charger, setting it down in various places or putting it in my jacket while asleep. I don’t need to use it while sleeping, but don’t necessarily want to power it down. Close friends and family know to try mobile and land line to reach me.

I don’t know how much I’d trust this list, they definitely didn’t pick a very knowledgeable group of tech professionals. HP at 9%? eBay? Alibaba? Adobe? Uber? McAfee? EA, Nintendo? Seagate? Salesforce? NEC? Verisign? Intuit?

45-50% of their ‘professionals’ picked companies that are only marginally involved in any kind of technological advancement. Several are just basic software, they don’t have anything fancy, much less better than any tech coming out of every other company. Alibaba is basically craigslist for companies. Nintendo makes games... that are the worst in terms of technological advancement compared to every other major console. that’s part of their business plan, and why they cost maybe $150 instead of $600 for the xBox or PlayStation. EA doesn’t even develop anything, they just do software. Games. Valve should be ranked higher, they’re at least doing more with Source 2 engine and their attempts at VR.

That is pretty cool, I must admit!

I’m really going to miss Touch ID, though.

I often times want to check my iPhone at night, and right now I just press with thumbs or fingers and it’s instantly unlocked.

With Face ID I have to bring it up to my face and look at it, really more cumbersome than simply pressing my finger on the Home button.

I hope they bring it back...

So if I want to buy from the US Cellular store I can go there and stand in line and they’ll be selling it?

Thanks.

Out of million of iPhone 8 models delivered, exactly TWO have had a problem, Minnesota. TWO, count them on the arms of your body. Most likely a bad case of glue heat curing. It happens.

There’s a thread on FR on this.

Years ago, I was anything but Apple, but got my wife an iPhone to avoid the BS. Eventually, I got an iPhone.

Apple’s relentless pursuit of the unified garden finally prevailed for the portable devices, but it’s still a non-starter for workstations.

You obviously have never really used a Mac. My Mac Pro workstation with Xeon processor runs nine different Operating Systems, sometimes simultaneously. . . including UNIX (the Mac IS a UNIX based computer), macOS 13 High Sierra, iOS 11, Microsoft Windows 10, Microsoft Windows 8.1, and Microsoft Windows 7, and three different flavors of Linux. . . all operating in windows of the macOS system as hardware virtual machines. In addition I have software emulations of AmigaOS, AtariOS, and Commodore C=64/128, plus a very efficient OS called THEOS that used to run all the workstations in our office, all of which run quite well. A Mac can run far more software than any Windows box. . . Because it is natively UNIX, and designed from the ground up to be multi-user and multi-OS.

The Mac is by no means a "walled garden," in either hardware or software. That’s a myth. It has not been for almost two decades.

I’m seriously considering upgrading to this when it comes out next month.

You still think Apple is a non-starter in Workstations?

Out of necessity, I’ve developed on the iMac and used production graphics tools. I didn’t hate it, but it’s not a goto platform for me. Once the finances permit, I’ll likely get a new iMac for dev but not pleasure. Fewer cores, high clock, 64GB, 2TB SSD/PCIe, and of course the beautiful 27” display. I confess, the recent iMacs are purty machines.

For the linux-related requirements, I have a variety of distros on Xen hypervisors. So while the iMac is cool in a BSD way, it doesn’t provide a seamless linux-like domain — guest VMs notwithstanding.

My workstations must be internally accessible. I can’t be breaking display seals to change out components. I looked at the server platforms, but they’re pricy for the given hardware. Would be nice if OS X could be hosted on arbitrary metal, or as a guest VM.
