A gang of drug traffickers machine-gunned a McDonald's after their demand for 40 free burgers with fries and soft drinks was turned down. Terrified customers - including some with young children - were seen hiding under tables and crouching down behind the counter at the fast food store in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro as they came under attack. One of the bandits was filmed telling a McDonald's manager what he wanted - before a suspected accomplice repeated his request for free food when his partner-in-crime was turned away.

Rio is a nasty city.
We had to stay in Brazil for about a month a few years ago, including Rio for a few days. Our Brazilian friends in the States told us not to go out at night in Rio and to stay away from the beaches.
One of them had returned home to continue her studies, and we met her there when we were in Rio. We had dinner together, and I suggested we take a walk on the beach. We were in the Copa Cabana neighborhood. She told us the only beach that was safe was Ipanema. I asked her why, and she said it was because the Policia Militar like to hang out there because there are nudes. Since we had the kids, we decided that Ipanema wasn’t a family beach by our definition.
We visited for a while, and then she said she would have to return home, because it would be dark soon.

But the Olympics would fix all the minor issues?
