There is some overlap between halal and kosher; in my area it is definitely to accommodate the halal crowd. I believe the owners themselves are the “halal crowd”.
I never went back after my first visit there; they were already making the sandwich when I saw the fine print, so from then on I’ve been going to the last family-owned American deli in my area. A bit more expensive, but I can eat swine and they have LIVERWURST...
