Sounds like a trip I took coming home from Florida to Connecticut when I was 14. Tampa to Tallahassee to Atlanta to Hartford. It was an Eastern Airline flight, but whoever got me that flight was not thinking. Eastern had a non stop from Tampa to Hartford...and so did Northeast...
It actually was stopping at ORD from a London to St. Louis route on TWA. I needed to connect in STL. Just seemed funny to ride such a big bird like that for such a short trip.
Flew them a few times after that, like on a trip to Australia, so those were a bit longer.
I agree with the many posters who liked the L-1011. Maybe my favorite. I also got to fly on a Northwest Convair 580 in the late 80s. The thing was probably built in the 50s. Curtains in the windows. That was fun!
I think my first 747 trip was Chicago to Denver and for a similar reason to yours. Denver to Destination X was next on the agenda.
