SFWA President Appears To Break Org Rules In Escalating Feud With Hispanic Author
Jon Del Arroz blog ^ | 09/20/2017 | Jon Del Arroz

The politicization of science fiction became apparent to the public with the social justice requirements added to the decision making for the Hugo Awards, of which Sad Puppies was a push-back. Now the Science Fiction Writers Association is openly penalizing and shaming conservative writers like Jon Del Arroz for pointing out its active discrimination against male writers.

Does anybody know what the readership is for SJW science fiction? I get most of my science fiction today via Audible and there’s no shortage of terrific stuff that doesn’t insult me.

Been a SiFi fan for years. It's getting harder and harder to get good new books. Never been a big fantasy fan with the exception of some of the earlier authors such as Vance, Howard. Little hard SiFi now days. Too many chick books.

It's been an interesting thing to watch. The SFWA is nearly entirely taken over by political hacks and now fancies itself an arm of social justice. This is a reflection of a trend within the publishing industry itself; although the latter is nowhere near so pronounced, they tend to feed off one another. A Hugo used to be the key to a career in SF, so it isn't simply public relations.

The recourse is the one we have seen in news: the Internet, self-publishing, and the gradual diminution of the self-proclaimed Lords Of Fiction. A lot of authors are going to have to starve to make it happen, but happen it will.

Self-publishing is growing. There are also small presses catering to conservatives and libertarians.

Relatively small, given that the biggest argument against SJW based awards was that they were NOT the best selling books.

One of the great things about our country is that if something doesn’t fit your needs or desires then you have the opportunity to create something that does. If there are enough disaffected SciFi writers that don’t agree with the SFWA and the direction it is going, then they can create a new organization that does serve their needs. All it requires is someone who is willing to step up and do the hard work. They should stop whining that the SFWA has been taken over, and like an overpopulated bee hive, move out and create a new hive. However, if the take over of the SFWA occurred with a minority of the SciFi community, then someone will need to galvanize the majority to take the organization back. Either way, hard work is required.

"Never been a big fantasy fan with the exception of some of the earlier authors such as Vance, Howard."

You might try something I just found recently, what .. to me .. is a new genre: something called LitRPG. It comes in many sub-genres (sci-fi, fantasy, z-war, etc) and most of it appears to be very well-written. It's particularly enjoyable if you were a D&D or other RPG-type of old-style wargamer. You might want to start off with Aleron Kong or J.A. Cipriano; I've been very pleasantly surprised with their quality.

I’ll give it a look thank you. I’m still in mourning over the death of Jerry Pournelle.
