After pouring hot sauce into his eyes to keep himself awake no longer worked, Army Pfc. Alex Blum began snorting chewing tobacco. When that failed, he cut his earlobe with a knife.
Still, after being pushed to strenuous physical activity for over 30 hours, he could barely keep his eyes open.
The months he spent training to be an Army Ranger tormented him physically and psychologically, and left him changed as a person. They may even have turned him into a bank robber.

The OSS was really worried that their training would get people killed after the war. They didn’t stop it, of course.
Some people aren’t cut out to be Rangers. Someone should of punched this guy’s ticket and sent him back down.
My BS meter is pegged with this one.
Riddled with inaccuracies and nonsense.
The selection process washes out most of the psychologically fragile, but nothing is perfect.
Boys will be boys.
I think about 8 of 9 days with no sleep can be fatal for some people, I heard.
Yep true
Rangers and Navy seals are known to have very tough training, and frankly not everyone gets thru it all.

Boys will be boys.
Totally bogus BS
Yep me too. Sounds like some embellishing by the author or the convict but some of that is a bit out there.
When I lived in Columbus Ga in 1995, 4 ranger candidates died from hypothermia while they were training at Eglin AFB. The instructors kept the exercise going on the Yellow river at the edge of acceptable conditions. It’s very tough training. God Bless all the men and women of the US Armed forces and their families.
“Still, after being pushed to strenuous physical activity for over 30 hours, he could barely keep his eyes open.”
Oohboy.
Did 72 hours straight live fire training, artillery, without sleep.
Makes me wonder about this boy.
While sleep deprivation is part of the training they do get to sleep 3-4 hours daily. They get two MRE’s a day which equal over 2,00 calories but rigorous training eats those calories up. You’ll lose a considerable amount of weight. By the time you get your patch you’ll look like death warmed over.
Did this guy attend the Dan Rather school of Whacko Veteran Tall Tales?
Yep ..... Sleep deprivation kicked my butt hard.
I don’t know the truth of what this guy went through, but one of my favorite books is A Mouth Full of Rocks, about a French Foreign Legionnaire’s experience in the Legion.
I have watched the Rangers and the Air Force Pararescue on some History Channel type shows.
Impressive isn’t the right word. I am surprised that more than something like 2 percent pass.
My Father who was a combat veteran of WWII practically worshiped Rangers. There was another group, actually two groups that he really hated. One was truck drivers and the other was para-troopers. He would grudgingly admit the para-troopers were good fighters.
I was on the same college team as a Ranger Captain. He was about as easy going and likeable as a guy gets. But of course you knew.
