‘Mother!’ Is the Worst Movie of the Year, Maybe Century
Observer ^ | 9/15/17 | Rex Reed

Posted on 09/15/2017 4:26:57 PM PDT by Haiku Guy

From the idiotic drug-addict hokum Requiem for a Dream to the overrated, overwrought and over-hyped Black Swan, which I called “a lavishly staged Repulsion in toe shoes,” the films of wack job Darren Aronofsky have shown a dark passion for exploring twisted souls in torment. But nothing he’s done before to poison the ozone layer prepared me for mother!, an exercise in torture and hysteria so over the top that I didn’t know whether to scream or laugh out loud. Stealing ideas from Polanski, Fellini and Kubrick, he’s jerrybuilt an absurd Freudian nightmare that is more wet dream than bad dream, with the subtlety of a chainsaw.

This delusional freak show is two hours of pretentious twaddle that tackles religion, paranoia, lust, rebellion, and a thirst for blood in a circus of grotesque debauchery to prove that being a woman requires emotional sacrifice and physical agony at the cost of everything else in life, including life itself.

The great mind of Jennifer Lawrence who literally auditioned on the casting couch for this flick, this movie is a metaphor for Mother Earth.
No really ...she said that.

Maybe this will put more than a dent in Trump and America hating Jennifer Lawrence’s career.

I thought Aronofsky's Pi and Requiem for a Dream were both very well done.

Maybe Rex just likes happy-happy-joy-joy movies.

Is Jennifer an ecosexual? That's a real thing unfortunately.

If you only hug trees, then you're a prude.

I don’t think Rex Reed remembers watching Highlander 2...

... kinda understandable as, along with Ishtar, people block that out of their conscious memories.

The Fountain is Aronofsky’s masterpiece. If you can’t find the beautiful, life-affirming love story in the movie, you are not paying attention.

I agree. I also liked The Fountain.

she has announced she is going on a 2-year hiatus. I’m guessing it’s not voluntary.

Requiem For a Dream is a ridiculously good movie, although incredibly dark, but that is how addiction is.

Mother is a film that I never intend to see. I’m not interested in anything with Jennifer Lawrence in it.

As far as stars go, she has to be the most incredibly average looking woman I’ve ever seen, and she’s an obnoxious dope to boot.

I haven't seen mother! and most likely won't.

There was nothing disgusting about Pi, it was just weird ... in a great way.

Requiem for a Dream had a number of disturbing scenes, but they all made sense within the context of the film. There was nothing egregious.

Maybe Aronofsky goes too far in mother! but maybe not.

I've seldom agreed with Rex Reed. Even when I liked the same movies as him it was for different reasons.
