MICROSOFT has promised not to repeat its initial, somewhat forceful approach to Windows 10 upgrades.
Microsoft has responded to a lawsuit from a German consumer agency by promising not to repeat its initial approach to Windows 10 upgrades.
Microsoft was heavily criticised during the initial roll-out of the next-generation operating system.
Between mid-2015 and mid-2016, during the promotional year when customers could claim a free upgrade to Windows 10, Microsoft preinstalled 6GB of data on users machines.
The 6GB data dump was designed to make installing Windows 10 faster, however, there was no obvious way for users to opt-out of the preinstall if they did not want the upgrade.
Microsoft was also heavily criticised for pestering its users with pop-ups and dialogues boxes about the new software.
This somewhat forceful approach led to a bevy of lawsuits in the United States, with disgruntled Windows users complaining about their computers upgrading automatically resulting in damaged and lost data.
In Germany, regional consumer protection agency Verbraucherzentrale Baden-Württemberg sued Microsoft.
Verbraucherzentrale announced last week there will be no ruling after the case made its way to the Munich regional court.
However, Microsoft voluntarily agreed to halt the offending behaviour.
Consumer watchdog Verbraucherzentrale Baden-Württemberg said that thanks to Microsoft's pledge the company is "obliged to avoid placing installation data for new operating systems on Windows users' hard drives without their permission".
"We would have wished for an earlier backing-down, but [Microsoft's statement] is a success for consumer rights in the digital world," said Cornelia Tausch, who heads up the regional consumer authority.

After windows 8 I decided to go to Apple. I am there finally.
So, is State Collective Farm #34 better than State Collective Farm #10?
It’s a TRAP!!!!!
Installing Parallels (software) on a Mac allows you to install other operating systems and run them in their native environment.
Personally I have been installing Windows 8.1 on various Mac’s for my clients who have had enough BS from Microsoft.
W 8.1 allows you to install it is “Classic’ mode.
Solid and stable - and NO automatic updates!
Microcrap: Subversive and intrusive liars.
At least with no updates you know the NSA backdoors will remain for them and other hackers to exploit. Stability has two sides.
I’ll stick with Ubuntu for 99% of what I need from an OS.
I have a similar gripe about my MOTO E smartphone. It came loaded with a lot of Google crap.
I have had it nearly 2 years. Now, when I do the frequent updates, several of the Google programs stall and will not load. The phone claims ‘no storage space’. Yet, the settings shows 200+MB free.
I tried to delete some of the Google apps I never use. It would only let me restore them to their original installation and would only allow ‘disabling’ them, but not deleting them. After restoring to original, it would then allow the update to install. I did notice that restoring some of those Google apps and then updating caused the phone to dump upwards of 50MB of apparent junk in the app directory.
Half or more of the Google apps I do not even use and have no idea what they do. I have yet to figure out the difference between Google Streets and Google Maps, yet each one it taking up millions of bytes on the phone, and the phone won’t let me fully delete either.
Yes, Google is a real intrusive pain in the arse. Their junk gets into just about everything.
And when you use their search engine for any story remotely related to political issues, you must wade through 5 or 6 pages of left-wing source results before you get to anything approaching conservative.
Haven't seen where it allows me to decide which update to choose and whether to automatically download, etc.
Been getting an "error trying to install updates" notice for a HP Notebook specific one and it looks like they're trying to push an update that is incompatible with the computer - hope they figure it out and stop pushing updates that aren't compatible. Got a "features" update last week and it caused problems because it required me to flash an updated BIOS.
Curiosity got the better of me and I just checked my LG Tracfone to see what Google apps it has.
Chrome, Gmail, Google settings, Hangouts, Maps, Music, Play Games, Play Movies, Play Music, Play Newsstand, Play Store, Street View, and simply Google.
Like you, I'm clueless about most of them, but I can't see that my life has suffered without them, lol.
NSA has every key stroke form both but at least Mac works unlike ws/hp
How can confirm that?
How can I JOIN ongoing Class action suits against Microshaft??
So many questions...
So few reliable answers...
“Hangouts”, based on title alone, is about the last of their apps that I would consider trying. Have no idea what it is, but it summons thoughts of an internet chatroom dominated by Starbucks-type ‘Hipster’ schmucks. And I sure don’t want to “hangout” with them.
I’m thinking of going to Windows Server to get away from Cortana and other miscellaneous bloatware.
Admiral Ackbar was right.
