The tiny Caribbean island of Barbuda was steamrolled by Hurricane Irma — as the superstorm’s confirmed death toll climbed to three Wednesday.

Barbuda and Antigua Prime Minister Gaston Browne reported that 90 percent of the structures on Barbuda were destroyed by the ‘cane, which was packing sustained 185-mph winds when it made landfall at 1:47 a.m.

He repeatedly said over a crackling radio line that the island, which is home to about 1,500 people, is destroyed, according to the Guardian.

Islands have literally disappeared but Barbuda is still on the map, just fewer structures standing. I wish them well.

Have they never thought before of importing and building exclusively with concrete in Barbuda?

Yes windows can still get blown out if not covered well, and roofs can get blown off but structures would still be standing and rebuilding will be a whole lot less costly.

But then it wouldn’t look like some tropical island tourist trap where people pay thousands to spend a few days...lol

Branson posted this 10 hours ago:

"I haven't had a sleepover quite like this since I was a kid. Wonderful team here on Necker all well"

"Expecting full force of Hurricane #Irma in about 4 hours, we’ll retreat to a concrete wine cellar under the house"

He hasn't posted anything since, so I guess his Internet is kaput.

Hmmm. I always thought high ground was better. Better get some pumps in that wine cellar basement.

Should have put up some storm shutters. That masking tape on the windows is not going to help very much.

Looks like that house is up pretty high, so I guess "under the house" isn't under ground... looks like its all built pretty tough.

“He hasn’t posted anything since, so I guess his Internet is kaput. “

So Irma has given us something to be grateful for.
