My wife and I were driving on the Kangamangus Highway up in New Hampshire a few years back, when something caught my eye on the side of the road. I thought it was a dirty rag, but I saw it again, and it was the wing of a large bird.
I pulled over, and it was a Barred Owl, just hit by a passing truck. I thought it was dead, then saw it was breathing, though its wing appeared misshapen.
I got a large boot bag (for ski boots) that was empty, and put the owl in it so we could take it to a raptor center about 10 miles away. I left about three inches unzipped to let air in.
My wife was driving, and I was in the passenger seat with the bag on the floor between my legs. We had gone a few miles, when the bag started moving abruptly and somewhat violently.
As I watched, a large talon appeared, then poked through the air hole and began clenching and waving around! (between my legs, on the floor!)
I have a vivid imagination...
We made it and dropped it off...they sent us a card a few months later saying it had been released.
What a wonderful story from the Kang! Thanks for sharing.
