A man cleaning his gun accidentally shot through the floor of his Oceanside apartment Tuesday evening, critically injuring a woman who was watching TV.

The woman was sitting on her couch when she was hit in the leg by the bullet. She was unconscious and barely breathing when first responders arrived

The shooter has not been taken into custody, Bussey said.
This brings up the question of how does one clean a loaded anything? Maybe he was getting ready to clean it.
Either the floor was unsafe or that was huge caliber weapon.
When you’re done shooting, you’re supposed to clear your weapon. No excuses!
I will never understand how people clean a “loaded” gun, isn’t the first thing you do is unload the weapon?? I will say this t5hough, my Ruger MK1 22 target pistol requires that you Pull the Trigger to disassemble.
Idiot.
Charge him with felony stupid.

Whatever he was doing, he was doing it wrong.
Jeff Cooper’s Four Rules:[6]
All guns are always loaded.
Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
Cleaning, yeah right. Playing around with it, more likely.
............beyond my ability to understand why a grown man is cleaning a loaded gun.
He is either mega stupid or we are being fed some bs facts about what happened.
There, fixed it.
Whenever I handle any firearm I open the action and put my finger in the chamber to assure it is empty. I have never had one go off “accidentally”.
I hate it when that happens! I’m about done cleaning it when BANG it goes off. Then I have to start cleaning all over again. Arrrrg.
First rule of gun cleaning.....be sure it is clear of ammo
I was hospitalized with a shattered clavicle from a shot fired through an apartment front door that was closed at the time. The feral-American was playing with a gun outside. He was charged with nothing, not even for firing a gun in the city limits. The police told me the best thing I could do was to move from the town as they were increasingly unable to ‘protect’ the citizenry.
Glock... you gotta pull the trigger to release the slide. The guy didn’t clear the chamber first.
I almost never believe the “cleaning my gun” excuse. This negligent discharge is no different - I don’t believe it.
“””All guns are always loaded.””””
How do you clean your guns if you’re always assuming they’re loaded?
“...my Ruger MK1 22 target pistol requires that you Pull the Trigger to disassemble.” [eyeamok, post 6]
“Glock... you gotta pull the trigger to release the slide....” [Cobra64, post 64]
All Ruger 22 auto pistols of original pattern (Standard, Mk I,II,III,IV) require the hammer to be dropped (pull trigger) before disassembly can be accomplished. Mainspring housing cannot be removed any other way. And it can be a little tricky to get them reassembled: getting the hammer strut properly aligned with the mainspring guide cup must be done with care. Commonest owner-induced malfunction.
Colt’s Woodsman 22 pistols, and Hi Standard hammerless (concealed hammer) 22 pistols, must also have their hammers dropped before the slide can be removed.
Many autoloading handguns besides Glock require the striker to be relaxed before field stripping can be done. Guns of similar design perform the same way; true of original Walther P99 also.
A great many striker-fired blowback pocket autoloaders do not require the striker to be forward on disassembly, but it’s a good idea. A cocked striker makes for a tightly compressed striker spring, which can fly out suddenly on slide removal, which may cause kinks.
When it comes to cleaning & repair, one must modify the First Rule (”every gun is always loaded”) to “Every gun is always loaded until unloaded status is verified to an extremely high confidence level.”
Heavy Marine population in Oceanside. if it was an Marine should be drummed out.
