Man accidentally shoots nail into heart, drives himself to hospital
ABC11 ^ | 16 Aug 2017

"I thought it just nicked me. I looked down. I couldn't see anything,"...

As he tugged at his sweatshirt, Bergeson, 52, said he realized only about 1 inch of the 3-inch nail was sticking out of his chest...

So he washed up, hopped in his truck and made his way to Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette, about 10 minutes away. After parking his truck and walking into the ER, Bergeson said he started to feel more pain and summoned a security guard for help.

"If you could find someone that would be great, I'm just going to sit down," he told the guard...

After X-rays were taken, Bergeson was rushed by ambulance to Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay. "I offered to drive myself, but they wouldn't let me," Bergeson said, chuckling...

Bergeson spent just two days in the hospital and has been recovering at home since the incident.

This would have been a good episode of “Home Improvement”

That was too close for comfort! Glad he’s recovering.

On Home Improvement, everyone in the ER knew Tim on a first name basis.

If he shot a nail into his heart he'd be dead. Fast.

He shot a nail into his chest. Bad headline AP.

Shot through the heart and you’re to blame...

From the article:

“Dr. Alexander Roitstein confirmed the nail hit Bergeson’s heart...”

If so then not by much. I’d be interested to see the x-ray.

“Zero days work related injury”

That is correct!
He was working from home the whole time after the incident.
Notice that he was texting, that was when he was on his personal time break.

A co worker and I retired the same day.
Being an exemplary employee, he cleaned out his desk and locker a few days early and carted his collection to an outside dumpster.

An unseen, razor sharp burr cuts him nicely, ten stitches.
Firetruck, ambulance, security...

We worked for a Mega Corp, where a band-aid would place you on DOUBLE SECRET PROBATION!

A lost day accident would give you the mark of Cain.

Get them back to work.
At any cost!

"If you could find someone that would be great, I'm just going to sit down," he told the guard...

If it was the hospital near me, he would have waited 4 hours.

If he’d made any move to extract the nail he’d have died quickly. As it was, the nail was acting like a cork in the holes it had made, keeping bleeding to a minimum.

Easly happen in urban areas.
Used to hunt on a friends family farm near Peshtigo.
Most locals knew the family name and would make other connections, Fred lives near my cousin Joe and I’ve met ...

Without any connection, there can be less concern for your fellow man. I’m going on break, Stosh will help you...

I would of pulled it out for him. Save him a trip to the hospital. He’s never gonna get that house finished at this pace!

Excellent point that I missed. Having a hole in the heart that is plugged keeps blood from accumulating in the pericardial sac. Without the nail, it would have filled quickly and stopped his heart.

I stand corrected.

.
This is more common than you might think!

Nail gun shots happen all the time on framing jobs.

Blush. I’m not in the medical field, but I had read about a similar case. It stuck in my mind.

How do you accidentally shoot a nail into you? Every nail gun I’ve ever used has a safety catch that has to be depressed before the gun will shoot.
