I’ve known a couple of vets who almost died from all the meds they were getting from the VA because they were seeing so many different doctors. One was taking 32 different pills, the other over 20.
Both of them were near invalids until someone got them off all of the medication. They had several more happy healthy years before cancer eventually got them.
I had an uncle going to the VA that was on either ~100 medications per day or ~100 pills per day from exactly that. I kept recommending he go see a private doctor (could have through my aunts insurance) but he refused (I earned those VA benefits at Pearl Harbor!) for a long time. My mom finally convinced them and they cut the pills down to a reasonable level.
Even on an electronic medical record, few providers will take the time to ask, is all this necessary? Easier to go with the flow than to trim down meds.
