I concur. So far, in my case, no important calls have been lost, and a ton of garbage has been avoided.
“The whole thing is sort of comic relief to me.”
On our wireline phone we have a message stating that “due to the high incidence of telemarketing calls we don’t ever answer this phone.” But sometimes, for my comic relief, I see what is obviously a TM call, I pick up and put my finger on the mike. If it’s a robo dialer, as most TM calls are, the stupid machine is waiting for someone to say something, so it waits and waits, which hopefully is burning up their bill. It usually takes 30 seconds for it to figure out that no one’s there.
The other fun thing to do if you get a live person is tell them you’re going to hunt them down. One guy said he was going to sue me for threatening him. I told him I’d be waiting for his summons so we could explore in court what he was doing on the phone. Needless to say, he didn’t sue and he never called me again.
The last thing that they are doing now is “spoofing” phone numbers so your phone does show a number. If you followup, it is always either someone who doesn’t know that when they are not on the phone themselves, that the TMers are hijacking their number and using it. Alternatively, they find numbers that are currently not in use, and use them to call you on.
“Yeah, I know, this is an Apple thread — so what... “
I’m an Android guy but Thank You. Those robo-calls piss me off too.
I no sooner read this and the phone rang with a call telling me that my computer has a virus and needed immediate attention so I played along with “Fred” with a Indian accent and wasted about 5 minutes of his time by asking him to repeat things over and over and ended it by screaming in his ear that I have a iMac. I’m thinking about getting a air horn in a can to sign off with...
I’ve been disappointed that NoMoRobo doesn’t put numbers I’ve reported into their system (on our old landline, not mobile). There are several numbers I’ve added to NMR multiple times, but the calls keep coming from those numbers. Nuisance calls to my mobile aren’t too bad, maybe one or two a week. The old landline gets ten a day. I got it under control with a multi prong defense - NMR + call block on Comcast + call block on our Panasonic cordless phone. The Panasonic makes it easy to block entire area codes or area codes plus entire prefixes which I no where do more frequently. The big problem with the Panasonic system is that you cannot connect it to your computer for easy management and backup — it’s all on the cordless base station and handsets. I don’t think I can transfer all the blocks I’ve set up to a new, replacement phone when this one gets old or breaks.
It does appear so. There is no follow-up available to track what happened after your report.
I suspect that the DNC list is an employment service for the unemployable relatives of politicians!
Sure thing, you're welcome. The basic info appears to be useful regardless of phone type.
Funny, some smart guy might figure out it works on all phones.
“The MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE in this article is to NEVER say “Yes” to any question including “is this So-and-so” when they call. All they need is your voice saying the word “Yes” and they can paste it into an agreement to pay or agreeing to a contract for ongoing charges for anything. “
They don’t need you to say “Yes” if they are going to resort to that. They can just say you did.
>>Who picks up calls from un-recognized numbers ?
People who do business on their phones.
Besides, how could they run up thousands of dollars in charges without a credit card given to them? They didn’t tell you the truth.
The Do Not Call Registry is worthless.
nomorobo app is free ... subscription isn't.
Not answering is the first rule. As a second rule, I like to pick up the phone, put it on speaker and just be silent...until the disconnect. Sometimes it has funny results. Once I was watching a You Tube clip of Rodney Dangerfield and picked up a suspected robocall, without muting the You Tube. The caller, a woman, started laughing uncontrollably as Rodney delivered his stuff. I hung up after a minute or so, but suspect she was okay with the result of the call.
I check do not call and my phone has been registered since 2005. Still getting a bunch, so I downloaded TruCaller. I’ll see how it works.
I do that too, to anyone who does not leave a message.
Just today, in the last few minutes, my phone blocked three calls I have in my block list. It’s a pain to constantly have to add numbers to my block list. But it pays off later.
My HTC One used to tell me not to answer! Haven’t had one of those in a while, though.
I shut off my phone a lot, though. Maybe that’s why.
Yep, that’s the next phase we’ll experience - no call is seen coming through but you have a VM asking you to return the call.
I always ask them “Which one?” - after a while of back and forth I say “I have four, which one.” - then some more back and forth and I get around to was it “a windows computer or a Mac?”
After a while I cut it off by saying “all my computers are Macs.”
Hey, what can I say? Sometimes I need a break from work.
